Trying to get a generator for/to a friend in Puerto Rico
51. Author: Thunder.GerbilDate: Mon, 11/20/2017, 10:12PM EST
I wouldn't trust brown paper wrap right now, not down there. Very easy to peek inside, either intentionally or just through an accidental tear in the paper, and theft is running high. That generator might never make it. I'd get a plain brown box and just put the generator box into it.

USPS insurance is questionable. Filing claims is tough. your call there.

They have gas cans. Her boyfriend is a construction dude and handy man.

Hey tw... you should ship it to the store... duh... easy as pie. :)
56. Author: Thunder.GerbilDate: Mon, 11/20/2017, 10:57PM EST
Office Depot / Max or Staples has blank boxes in large sizes maybe they have something that fits, or even talk to a grocery store or place like that.

I suppose if you had to, you could franken-box it with a couple boxes, hot glue and fiberglass tape.

Frankensteined an 18X18X24 Walmart box. Looks ghetto.

By frankensteined I don’t mean I grabbed its teets while it slept.

Ships tomorrow. USPS to her P.O. box. Will insure and track.

Thanks for all the input. I prolly should have just shipped to store though.

It's on it's way. Expected delivery Friday. $121 to ship plus $10 to insure. We will find out.

Now I've got a whole table of first aid supplies, wet wipes, clorox wipes, food, batteries, glenmorangie airplane bottles etc to pack and send.

We haven't been able to talk to her due to bad cell coverage but texts can slip out. I guess it's worse than we are hearing. That jives with my commission corps buddy who just got back from there.

Hope USPS comes through.

Prayers sent for TW's generator to arrive safely....

Those poor people down there are getting the cold shoulder and put on the "back burner" by the U.S.

Any word on safe drinking water there Jones. I was wondering if something like Aquatabs for water purification would be needed or used?
64. Author: teedubbyaDate: Tue, 11/21/2017, 4:18PM EST
they still don't have water. paying 4 times normal price for bottled. I just don't really know how to address that one if shipping.

remember when you can't believe a thing the press says and power and water would be up in no time.... yea not so much. the press was right.

In the end I think the locals will be largely driven out and the big dollar resorts will take over the island.

mazel tov. proud of ya.

I had seen that the water they are scrounging up could be unsafe. I was thinking that the tablet water purifiers would come in handy. Thoughts?

I hate to tell you this, Drafter, but that rain forest is gone. I have a co-worker from Puerto Rico and he went back a couple of weeks after the storm to help his family as much as he could. When he came back I, of course, asked him how bad was it. He showed me several pictures of the devastation, including a home that he owned that had been his Grandmother's and he was going to retire to one day. It was gone. He was fine until he showed me pictures of the PR Rain Forest. Then he broke down as it is/was a tremendous source of pride for the island. It was just f*cking gone. Looked like an alien landscape. Tee is right. The mainland American public is not being told the truth about how bad it is down there or we have simply moved on. It's not political. It's not "Trump's Fault". It just is and it's kinda shameful that the we are allowing AMERICAN CITIZENS to continue to struggle as much as they are.

El Yunque. And yes it is gone.

Out of sight out of mind. Would love to find a water solution for our friend but I don’t know of one at the moment.

Someone I really respect repeated the trump line the other night though. The one about they expect us to do everything and won’t do anything for themselves. Lazy bassards.

It wasn’t a contentious conversation at all, we are friends. When I asked for details on what they should be doing to show they are doing something for themselves he didn’t really have anything. Just the phrase.

They are a complete disaster right now. They have no resources or means. We could argue about things before the storms (2 hurricanes in a row) but now there’s not much to argue about.

And make no mistake as someone who had to settle taxes, title, and sell land there I know how absurd and even corrupt their government can be. Their debt is outrageous. I don’t defend that. But Americans are dying. We will soon start to see how this fact is being hidden.

I know I’m biased but the whole thing makes me nauseous. And I do beleive this will end up with wealthy folks owning a resort island.

Here's a REALLY GOOD QUESTION:
(ONE I ALWAYS WONDERED ABOUT)

Q?? After these massive storms, fires , floods or hurricanes hit anywhere in america and everything is wrecked and no one is even working...do you still get bills? Like mortgages , school taxes, real estate tax bills? How do municipalities and banks survive when nobody can pay their bills, nobody is working , nobody is getting a paycheck and the house is *****ING ruined or totally gone...
And the insurance company doesn't pay because you weren't covered for an act of god?
Does everybody just declare bankruptcy?
Think about it...before the catastrophe ...bills out the azz every month , now everything is gone, do the bills keep coming and what actually does happen when nobody pays them?
81. Author: teedubbyaDate: Wed, 11/22/2017, 12:22PM EST
^ I can't answer all of it and would guess it's a mix. In their case they rent a house. The landlord is waiving rent in order to have them stay there, and protect the house. He's a construction/handy man sort so the landlord is getting a presence at the house (which is important) and someone taking care and repairing things.

Mr Jones - a lot of financial institutions will implement a program to delay repayment until the situation normalizes. It’s not in their best interest to foreclose or repossess in those situations and it’s a great way to alienate customers. I know the bank I worked for when Katrina came through was good to those folks during that time, although there were some execs that opposed that policy.

Was supposed to get there Friday. It did not. I just got a text from USPS saying it is in the local post office waiting for pickup.

Smokemonkey while I agree with you normally I think Puerto Rico is being handled differently than stateside. There are very different agendas involved.

Of that I have no doubt. There are several financial institutions that focus on servicing the Caribbean. I’m quite sure their business models are quite different. I would hope PR and the USVI would be better, but there’s a reason not many of them have a presence on the mainland.

They are $1,800 ... Not counting the solar panels...
Way out of your budget...
It is very cool though...

Hope they get yours this week sometime...
Gas will be the next hurdle for them, that's prolly in short supply too.
