Pretty sure nobody said we were going to get rich with tariffs. I'm struggling to understand why people are okay with lopsided tariffs (all against the USA) and call it "fair trade".

If you are looking for a read on how a tariff war can devolve into adverse outcomes, look up the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930. Look not only at the act, look at the downstream economic consequences. It didn't create the Great Depression, however, it reduced international trade, it intensified economic hardships both domestically and globally. When other countries fought back, it led to a sharp decline in U.S. exports and imports, which strained the economy further.
Hoover (Republican) signed it into law. The economy contiued to tank, and it directly led 16 straight years of a Democrat being in the white house.
About a third of the country would love that. I wouldn't.
