For the life of me I can’t come up with a single reason for her to want to share that story except that she is ready to retire from politics.

I'm with DMV.
It's an easy way to distance herself from the VP spot without coming out and saying it, though I dont think she would have been the right pick anyway. Even though it paints her in a bad light, enough people in her state may still look past it if she wants to stay in State government or even Senate/House.
