I just spent a 2 hr. drive with my first Warlock (Toro) - it lasted from driveway to driveway! I really enjoyed it. My only issue was that around the halfway mark the wrapper began to flare out a little bit. This may have been due to me ashing outside the window at 75 mph? It was given to me by a vet and I've kept it in my humidor for approx. 3 weeks, so I assume the flared wrapper isn't a 'care' issue (could be wrong, though).

Beyond the wrapper issue, I have a question about the way the Warlock is described on CI.

Here's how CI describes the Warlock (in part): “The smoke is complex and robust, issuing deep woodsy notes, nuts, and a long, rich finish complemented by subtle spices."

My question is this: What does 'complex' mean with regard to cigars?

In my noob opinion, I would have described the first 75% of this cigar as having a flat profile. By that I mean that it tasted/smoked the same, more or less, for the first 3/4 of the smoke. That said, I definitely noticed the "rich finish complemented by subtle spices" at the end.

Anyway, what the heck does "complex" mean? School me... Herfing

Thanks

Complex means one or more shifts in flavor and usually implies good flavors. Not many cheap cigars are going to be "complex". Most expensive cigars are not complex. You will catch one soon that starts out Tasting like coffee and then cream and then spice followed by coffee. That would in my mind constitute complexity. I had one yesterday that did just that.

I thought the candy cane I had tonight was very complex. Smooth chocolate and mild coffee at first, changing to a spiced rum, to an a strong coffee- pepper flavor.
Versus.
Tat fausto 114, dark chocolate and pepper all the way through only getting stronger as you finish.

How's that?

So it's possible that I just can't distinguish between the different flavors yet? Or maybe my setting (driving, 75 mph, dodging traffic, fidgeting with radio, etc.) wasn't real conducive to distinguishing between the different flavors? Or maybe just because CI says it's complex doesn't mean it's complex? Or maybe a little bit of all of that...

That cigar you smoked will never be complex.

You'll know when you have one that's complex, and can sit and do nothing but enjoy it. One of my faves is the TAA 11. NOT complex, great flavor all the way through getting stronger as you go. But really only one flavor.

Try a LFD Colorado oscuro, or a candy cane.

I'm still a complete novice at cigars but I will say that it took me some time for my palate to develop with food, spices, beer, wine, and liquor. Still got a ways to go on all of them in fact, but I do notice that I'm more tuned in to the background flavors, the supporting cast so-to-speak. To put it in terms of music when I try something that is very different from what I'm accustomed to all I pick up is the lead vocals. After some time with it, varying depending on what we're talking about, I start to notice the loud instruments (guitar, trumpet, etc.), then the softer ones (piano, bass, drums, etc.) and once I'm real comfortable with it every now and then you notice a triangle being played.

As far as complexity think of a symphony orchestra vs. a blues singer with a guitar. Neither is bad by any stretch but one is far more complex than the other.

They sold it so mission accomplished.

Complex is a term I use when there is more than one thing going on that make isolating a descriptive term is difficult. But what Bdrizzle said is what I would consider the standard answer.

Complexity is multiple distinct flavors occurring simultaneously. It's no different a definition for cigars than it is for wines, beers, foods, liquors or anything else that you would rely on taste sensory perceptions for. Changing of flavors as the cigar burns down is "dynamic".

I've never understood the drive to try to get into "Halmark card" descriptions like "starts out with hint of white pepper with a silky smooth exhale , 1/3 of the way into it, the cedar kicked in but yet creamy, then it blended into a spicy bomb followed with a nuance of smokey oak... the last 1/3 had hints of cinnamon & nutmeg."

Me? I'm a simpleton.

I like smokes that burn good, have a nice draw first and foremost. Nothing ruins a good cigar faster than bad construction.

Then they need to have a coffee & mocha palate with a molasses sweetness. I also favor ones with leathery tones & earthy undertones and a slight nasal of Granny Smith apples.

In the end, I just buy those cigars that sound good in the add copy descriptions

A lot of the post IMO are correct. I think of a complex cigar as one that holds your attention and has ypu noticing changes in the flavors ad the transitions while you smoke it. As Bdrizzle said a cheap cigar or a yard gar isn't going to have near as much going on and will be more one dementional.
so those are good cigars to mow the lawn or whatever because they don't need your un divided attention to get your $ worth.

Cohiba Pyramid barber pole bought on the beaches of Cancun. That is the definition of complexity! The other two cigars that come in the glass top box are good but not the same level. There is something romantic about buying high end cubans on the beach from a local Mexican man. You know your getting the best because he has a friend that lives in Cuba.
