A friend gave me a Cuban Montecristo Sunday. I smoked it on the way home from work. As soons as I lit the stick, it started unraveling. I kept smoking it determined to finish it. Before I lit it up I had noticed it had a mottled wrapper, which is usually (not always) a bad sign. It kept getting worse. I began to think it was counterfeit but it tatsed faintly like a Cuban Cohiba I had smoked many years ago and I felt that no counterfeit would have such a nice flavor profile. Finally, about 1/3 the way through I just gave it up and threw it away. I was thinking that maybe I should have put it in the humi for about 6 months or so before lighting up. What is your take (yes, I realize it was only ONE cigar?)

Any cigar whit that kind of potential needs to be aged under proper conditions for at least six months unless you know it was properly stored for by the donor.

I recently purchased a few Montes from a very reliable source and their wrappers were more mottled than I am used to. The cigars were a newer release. I put them away for a nap and the discoloration has also diminished. I think they were too wet when I received them. Sounds like that may have been your problem as well.

A friend gifted me a couple of cigars from a cuban guy in Miami that gets cigars from cuba when he visits famity - for his personal use.. No label....i am sure it is from cuba but don't know if it is good one or maybe a peso cigar......if it was couteterfeit wouldn't it have a label? They were very dry so I am letting g rest before I try them.

Montecristo and Cohiba have a totally different flavor profile. Perhaps both the Cohiba and Monte were fake.

Provided it's been reasonably well cared for, it shouldn't require more than a couple weeks in the humi to become smokable.

Just my $.02

Just because the band says "Montecristo" doesn't mean it's real. Your palette is experienced enough to remember what a Cuban Cohiba tasted like many years ago? LMAO? Do you work for Cigar Aficianado too?
Just because they're unbanded from a 'cuban' guy in Miami who gets them when he visits, doesn't mean it's quality tobacco. If they're that dry, that should tell you something. Fresh cigars are never dry!

Damn Noobs!!! It's like the blind leading the blind.

Fakes abound. I've been gifted fakes by supposedly 'knowledgeable botl'. Know your source(s)....if you care about authenticity. Or, don't bother. Plenty of good fakes out there, too. Not a lot of sense in stressing about onesies and twosies.

I like Montes.

Can't say I ever had one unravel on me.

Had one burn my lips once because I nubbed it too low, couldn't smoke for 2 days after that.

It's amazing how some people can say so much while knowing so little. I am not a noob but I do not downgrade their status as lower than mine because I was one once. Apparently, you never were and were born a cigar genius (very rare.)I remember a cigar if it is outstanding. The Cohiba I smoked was such a cigar. That's not to say I have a palette as experienced as you seem to think yours is. No, I don't read CA, subscribe to it or even read it. They are as inaccurate and as inane as you seem to be. Nor did I say anywhere that the Montecristo I smoked was either unbanded or bought in Miami. It was banded and bought in Cuba. I know that this is not a guarantee that it is authentic however, but I must bow to your obvious superior wisdom in all things that are cigar. You perhaps should consider writing a book called, "Smoking Cigars by an Idiot," er, I mean "Cigar Smoking for Idiots." [sarcasm]

^^^ Less than 1,000 posts - you're still a Noob here. When did being called a Noob become an insult?
Saying you remember a cigar is much different than saying you remember what it taste like many years ago.
Are you sure it wasn't a fine Gran Habano you where smoking?

This escalated quickly.

I know what a Cuban tastes like, and I'm still a noob!

Embrace your noobness and just admit that your palette is just out of diapers.

I am voting the Monte was fake.

What got me back back into cigars several months ago was an infamous glass top box of yellow/orange wrapper COHIBA's from the Dominica. These were brought to me by an employee visiting home. I now know they were fakes, albeit they were still tasty treats that I gave several to friends and just indulged in the last one a few weeks ago.

Ironically, I have seen boxes of Partagas (PSD#4 and 898 Varnished) with the box code POS. They were produced in about 2008 and were wonderful smokes. d'oh!

Yup.

I've had a couple Cuban made fake Montecristos. Dunno the original source, came across an estate sale that listed a large humidor full of cigars. Threw in a lowball bid figuring it was likely neglected for some time. Won and opened it and was initially pleasantly surprised by the contents. But, the Monte bands were off-center and the wrong color. Tried some anyways, and still had the Cuban flavor profile but not the CC Montecristo flavors. They weren't awful, but also weren't anything noteworthy. They were decent mild Cubans. The fauxhibas on the other hand, were awful and got thrown out.

If you were twice as smart as you pretend to be, you still wouldn't be half as smart as you think you are.

Any cigar can act like that if mistreated. I don't think you can draw any conclusions.

You're confusing "smart" with "smart-ass". Any one who knows me, knows I'm more of the latter.

Wrong again noob. d'oh!

It's called auto-correct ya noobster. Some come from the backwoods where a palette meant heat and a way of mnaking a livin'

99cobra2881 mentions grahamar?!?! Ya idget - it's spelled "grammar"! Learn how to spell before correcting anyone on proper grammar!

Damn noobs! Is that all ya got??? Is this English Class or a cigar forum?

Phffft!

Go back to smoking Fohiba's and reviewing how upset you are with how they taste.

I didn't. Anyhow,I usually pick on Q, but I'll give him a pass this time. Cacman is someone you all should listen to, and I never publicly thanked him for his humidor advice here some time ago, so thanks Carl- that stinky humidor is alive and smelling normal.

Oh how I wish an anti-smoking PC grammar (grahamar) Nazi would find this thread by accident!

They think Cuban people are POS
Oh they smoke those stinky poisonous cigars AND can't spell
I bet they are bitter European males clinging to their guns and religion

Even better they then find all of Jack's posts!
