March 27th – 20 BF of 4/4 Black Walnut FAS rough. Also got the same in Spanish Cedar.

The pencil sketches I’m working up are for a small cabinet style humidor, about 3-4 cu/ft of storage.

I took lots of advice and opinions off of this board on what size humidor to get, and thank you all for the input. I decided not to go for the tower of power – I just don’t want to keep that much on hand. This should allow me to store 6 or more boxes and three drawers worth of smokes. A minimalist approach many will say.

‘Rocky’ the cat weight in just over 25 lbs.
The most common comment when seeing him is “That’s a big F*ckin’ cat!”

The wood came from Hardwoods of Dallas (near old TX stadium). This place is only a ghost of what they once were. Could only get FAS wood from a small skid. Next time I will go to Arlington (Hogans) although I understand that they are under an new name

The planer is a 13” Delta, and a bit rickety. The bands saw is a 1960’s Buffalo 14” currently under repairs” – but it will soon saw again. The table saw will do most of the work though.

Not to worry – I am equipped.

Brewha,

Hogans (now Stock) had a ton of Black Walnut the last time I was there.

You really won't need the band saw. Just plane it down to your final thickness. It looks like you have some significant bow in at least one of those boards. If so, don't fight it, go buy some more. Bow or camber will cause you more problems than you will want to deal with. I have found that getting the final true 90 cuts on the doors and panels can be the hardest thing to accomplish.

Looking forward to seeing your finished product. Good luck to you. Take your time, you'll do great!

Thanks Perfecto,
Had not been to Hogans in a few years (moved from Ft. Worth the Highland Village). Glad they are still there. Are you in the area?
The boards were less than perfect in terms of bow, hook, twist, etc. but the design calls for nothing longer than 28” – so this makes the yield much higher.
The case work should be straight forward, but I am not looking forward to cutting them corner joints. One good blowout and I’ll have a shorter humidore!

Up in Amarillo now, but lived in Fort Worth for the last 10 years or so. I used to own a company that made access doors for outdoor kitchens, bars, and theaters. We made most of them out of 8/4 and 10/4 American Black Walnut with Mahogany rails and styles. Pretty cool stuff really. They great thing about the walnut is no
bug will eat it. The wood poisons them! I just love the look of the wood, especially the parts that are almost purple. I am a Horned Frog after all.
