June 13th – Round dowels are nice. Square ones are sexy. And no one would want the lap joints of the door to separate – so ½” dowels to the rescue.

It’s called a hollow chisel mortiser - and it drills square holes.

Later this week the door hardware arrives, and then the door can be mounted.

Thx TMCTLT.
Good eye – American Black Walnut. It’s a hobby project for me. The cabinet is about 28” x 19” x 15”.

I have build lots of Mission style (Arts and Crafts) furniture that has though tenons and lots of square spindles. It took over 200 square holes for the bed alone, so the mortise seemed like a good investment.

I completed a basement remodel project recently that I provided and installed all amer. walnut cabinetry/base casing etc. Milled from logs, stickered etc. I also build a fair amount of furniture and gonna have to break down and get a mortise mach. Keep up the great work!!
Where from by the way? IN. here

^ William, its really just a drill bit housed inside a 4 sided chisel that squares the hole as the bit drills it. They are pretty sweet!

I aquired a shop-smith and a few other nice woodworking pieces a while back.. need to put them to work soon... I could set up in the garage but I'd rather build another shop... I've been watching this project close...

This motiser is bench top, and somewhat portable. They have much larger machines for the pros.

They also have a drill press attachment – so if you have a proper floor standing drill press, you too can drill square holes. Google “Mortising Attachment”

Great machine! I bought the same one several years ago off amazon after doing my homework. At the time it was rated the best bench top mortiser on the market. I have used the fire out of it...no more chiseling mortises for me!
