Project Humidor – 15 – Mounting the Glass

August 15th – The top and door glass will be held in with 3/8” strips of walnut (they are not yet oiled in this pic). The glass sits in a rabbit and the strips are nailed in with some brads. The nail holes had to be predrilled to keep the strips from splitting, and it makes assembly easier. The nails angle in towards the glass.

I tested some of the Spanish cedar buy putting it in my tuberdor for a week. The 5-5/16” piece expanded a little over 1/16” just as the math said it would. So, the lining at the back of the casing (which is about 4 times as wide) should expand by a total of 1/4” from “dry” to “wet”. Glad I allowed for the expansion, as this will prevent the boards from buckling once the humidor is seasoned.

I’ll be making shelves and drawers once the case is done – and the only thing left now is assembly and adding some hardware.

Next week it all comes together.

Wow, that looks like and awesome project. Wish I had the time and expertise to pull one of these off myself. Maybe later in life.

Math lesson for the old coot in a thong

5-5/16” + 1/16” expansion = 5-6/16” = 5-3/8”

look'n good! can't wait to see the final product.

are you using a brad nailer or setting the brads by hand (small hammer?) If using a nailer, you must have better aim with those things than I do -- no way I could shoot the brad into a pre-drilled hole.

Thanks to all –

Jojoc - I have some 5/8” x 17 brads and will tap them in with a small hammer – with a strip of wood protecting the glass. I wouldn’t use nail gun on the thin hardwood. The samples I tried wanted to (and did) split.

BuckyB – Thank you for the computational analysis. FGM probably missed what I meant, as I was typing awfully fast . . . .

Odd, I find myself wondering what the cost of air freight to Oklahoma is.
