August 21st – I love it when a plan comes together.
Four #14 screws attached the stand, a dozen staple gun brads attach the cedar, and two dozen brads hold in the glass.
The trick for getting the seal tight was to close the door and reach through the front window opening to press the bottom cedar strip tight and flush with the inside of the door. Three brads from the gun were shot in the cedar near the door, so expansion would be largely into the humidor and not into the door jam. The brads were knocked flush with a nail punch. Repeat for the other three sides, and the seal is complete.
I added a magnetic catch to the door and adjusted it so you could swing the door closed and get a satisfying “click”. When I added the last (front) piece of glass, I swung the door closed, and it did not “click”. In fact the door would not close all the way from a swing. I was not happy about this. So, I pushed it closed and heard a “whoosh” then a “click”. It had not occur to me that the doors seal was now operating, and that closing (or opening) the door meant moving some air that had been moving through the window hole. “Well, that’s a good thing” I said, and started smiling again.
I’m pre-seasoning the case now to make sure I won’t have any expansion issues. Next up is building some drawers and shelves.
