I bought a new humidor and I did everything I was suppose to. I have even left the small cup of distilled water in it and I have the juice and distilled water in the credo. I calibrated the analog hygrometer (thanks slim) but it stays at 70 for about a week and then starts dropping. This isn't normal is it. Any ideas?

here's a list of things to look for/qsts;

1. Where do you live? Is it a cold climate? i.e., runing the furnace quite a bit?

2. Does this contribute to low humidity in the house? What is the humidity in your house?

3. Have you seasoned your humidor? wiped it with a damp sponge? Note, some folks discourage this practice.

4. *Personal qstn, "how big is it?" How big is your humi? How big is your humidification device?

5. Is it filled? or lot's of open air?

6. What type of humidor is it? Who made it? Is it well made? With a good seal? Do you hear the air hissss out of it as it closes? Does it close softly as a result?

I have to put distilled water in all but one of my 10 'bargain' humidors at least once a week ... or they dropping ... the one that was more expensive (and better built) has a much better seal, and I only have to 'juice' it up about once a month.

... if that's any consolation.

I seem to have the same problem- I've done everything that I've heard, and have also bought a decent Paradigm humidifier, but can't seem to keep the humidity above just over 60. Really a drag considering how much I've invested in some of my smokes. It holds around 80 'gars, and is really pretty full. Guess I'm going to have to unload some of the ones that didn't make the grade to make room- but from what I hear that's pretty common around here.....

By the way, I'm a new poster to the boards, but have been lurking for a while. I know not to outbid Rick, that Hubcap looks like my uncle, and that asking about storing in the celophane or not is a no-no!

I'd appreciate any advice that may help my situation- up to and including new humidor recommendations.

Thanks Folks-

Matt in Seattle

Bu the way, the Perdomo2 I just finished was excellent...but you don't want to bid on them. Really.

Okay lets see if I can remember the questions:

Season it - Yes I wiped it down
Size - I hardly know you (just kidding) it is a 100 count humidor.
Seal - I hear no air hiss, it does have a lock, but it does close softley when I shut it.
climate - Indiana - don't like the weather wait five minutes.
smokes in the humidor - 5 - I have more but didn't want to ruin them if it doesn't stay at the right humidity.
credo thing size - just the small round one that came with it. plus I have an open cup of distilled water in the bottom
-it has a bottom and a pull out shelf.

I might need to add H2O. I put some in last week and it stayed at 70 but this week is a different story.

more help - thanks

wbslngr --- a humidor is not going to maintain the humidity very well with only FIVE cigars in it, for criminy sake! It should be at least ½ to ¾ full, and the cigars will help keep the balance ...

Once the Cedar swells a little and the humidity is at the right level ... it should be more air-tight, so you should notice it having a softer close.

I hope you are not putting the cup of water in the 'pull out shelf' that (on some humidors) is designed to hold your accessories ... LOL!

Bid on a cheap bundle, Diesel, Sportsmans Reserve, etc. and use the cheap sticks to regulate the Humidity. Pack them on the bottom, forget about em, and with a cigar like a Diesel, you'll be pleasantly suprised with them if you smoke one a year later.

Wit my "bargain" humidor the small credo isn't enough to maintain 65-70% RH. I took a plastic 35mm film container, driloled 6 holes in the lid, put in oasis foam, and filled with diustilled water. The combination of the two now maintain a 65-70% RH.

I use a plastic soap dish with oasis foam in my larger humidor and it works well with the included credo.
