You're kidding ... right?

Pre embargo Cohibas are practically non-existent, and are most likely counterfeit ...

... and if they ARE the real deal, the cost would be over a thousand, and could even be in the thousands!

I thought the Cohiba brand was created after Castro took over. X

I think X is right. Pre-embargo Cohibas then would be 100% counterfeit. Besides, even tho cigars mostly get better wth age, they reach their peak WAY before 50 years!

I found a site that claims they were around just befor the Em bargo 0f 1965..And the guy that has these is what you might call dumb honest he doesn't know much about Cigars but he said the stamp on the boxes was cuban and even gave the family name.. I have a chance to buy them (5) boxes but I didn't want to get but and I only wanted 1 of the boxes for myself so I was trying to figure out what would be a fair price and if I could sell the other 4.. Let me know if any one finds any thing else out.. Thanks All..Tin

Cohibas were only named Cohibas after Castro helped set up a factory to make them. A tobacco grower sent a cigar to Castro, and he was so impressed that he encouraged the creation of a factory for them. I'm not sure when the factory was made or when they started production. Castro took power in Jan '59 and the embargo was set in '62. It would be possible that there would be a pre-embargo box, though i wouldn't think it to be probable.

In 1492, during Columbus' first voyage to the "new world", he visited the island of Cuba. His sailors were introduced to "Cohiba" by the island natives, a bunch of dried leaves that were smoked in a pipe called a "Tobacco".
When Columbus returned to Spain with a sampling of the dried leaves, it is said that he mistakenly called the leafy smoke “Tobacco”. And so it goes…Cohiba, true to its brand, is “Tobacco”, literally. If there is one Cuban cigar that is truly worthy of it’s name, it is definitely the Cohiba. The brand, first introduced in 1968, was originally reserved for diplomatic use only. In 1982, three types of Cohiba Cuban cigars were introduced to non-diplomats: the Lanceros, the Coronas Especiales and the Panatelas. Three more vitolas were added to the brand in 1989: the Espléndidos, the Robustos and the Exquisitos, completing what is known as "La Línea Clasica". Five more vitoles were added in 1992 creating the "Linea 1492": the Siglo I, II, III, IV and V. Cohiba remains the “King of the Cubans”. Only the finest tobacco leaves are used to create the various types of Cohiba cigars.

If this story is true, there are no pre-embargo Cohibas.

From the official website:
"Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos. It was created for Fidel Castro in 1966 and was presented as an official gift to Diplomats and Heads of State."
* * * *
Other histories of the brand generally settle on 1982 as the year they first became widely distributed. If you can find one earlier than that, it would have to be one of those diplomatic gift cigars and would surely cost a fortune.

Okay First I want to thank every one for the help this is an area I'm not to sure about (Cuban Cigars) I have found out the whole story about these Cigars. The seller because there were some single sticks of Cohibas in this lot assumed that the sealed boxes were also cohiba . they are not the boxes are Cuban and have dates on them of 1960(1)1961(1)1962(3) and there are alot of other Smokes in the deal also.. So bacause of the help you all gave me and the additional checking I did I made a purchase at a once in a life time price and bought all he had even if they were fake at the price I gave it was a steal....Thank you all for your help...Tin

good ol CA did an interview with castro in its 10th anniversary edition, castro said the original cohibas were made for him by a single cigar roller/grower....
as such, they could not have existed before the embargo because they were rolled one at a time for castro
