And YES wanyburger, I checked the archives...I was at a party in, um, ahem, Rancho Santa Fe on Sunday night and was out on the patio drinkin' up a storm. Well this guy and his date sat at a table next to ours and he lit up a cigar. Well, of course! Being Esplendidoschick, I had to inquire as to what he was smoking. Monte #2 was the reply. Smelled nice, mild and now was really I pissed that I hadn't thought to bring any of mine with me (we don't REALLY smoke here in California...it's the law!) and was practically drooling all over him. I had seen him light it over a candle. I couldn't believe my eyes since you guys were pretty specific about lighting up a certain way. Well he said it was a no-no and that he usually uses a torch. Anyway, he said that I should take the cedar insert that lays on top of the cigars, break a piece off, and light THAT on fire, then light the cigar from that over the flame, not puffing it...Has anybody ever heard of or done that before? Maybe he was pulling my leg! That was a first for me. Maybe he thought I was so buzzed that I'd try anything! I told him about this site, but haven't noticed any newbies. So...what is your expert opinions?

Using a sliver of cedar from the cigar box is a age old way of lighting cigars. The older "zippo" style lighters use fuel that leaves a taste in the cigar and matches left a sulfur taste. This was before butane lighters of today that burn 100% and leave no tastes. I've heard some say that the aroma from the burning cedar adds to the cigar, made no noticable difference to me.

Ditto to what bud said...Some cigar stores sell or offer for free long strips of cedar specifically for lighting cigars....I haven't done it enuff to really comment if there's a difference...I just use a torch...The guy's an idiot for using a candle to light a Monte #2...What a waste...Reminds me of how p.o'd I get when I offer a good cigar to a newbie and they puff on it like a chimney and really don't enjoy it...My brother does that to tick me off on purpose...He knows it bothers me..That's why I now give him a lawnmower smoke, not my awesome Don Tomases (joke intentional) :)

When I'm smoking at home I usually light up with a piece of cedar. I guess it's just one of those things I picked up over the years. I've been in several cigar shops that keep a smoker's candle burning and keep a supply of the cedar slivers near by for use by the customers.

e-chick, that guy is a freakin' moron! His "Monte 2" was probably fake. WHY IN THE HELL WOULD YOU LIGHT ANY CIGAR WITH A CANDLE!? Even if that cigar were a Don Tomas ;) ? The cedar strip thing is a preference thing, I'll take my torch flame over a cedar strip or cigar match any day! And rookie, you shouldn't get p.o.'d at the newbie for ruining a good cigar, you should get p.o.'d at yourself for giving a newbie a good cigar, next time give them one of your Don Tomases ;)

I use a Colibri that leaves no after taste of butane....as far as the cedar trick, heard of it but I had rather build a house out of cedar than light up one of my cigars with it.

Rookie, I can send you some fresh Don Tomases. I feed my dog Ancla Y Cazadores and he rolls me Don Tomases and leaves them on the back lawn. Let me know.

No way...you gotta GUN! LOL! Honest, DTs were the first cigar I started smoking. I'm pretty sure they just made the "regular" line then. I haven't had one in years.
