So I am one of those morons who likes to buy everything in bulk. Is there anywhere you can get something like a gallon of 50/50 humidor solution? I only seem to see it in little 8 oz bottles, and I have to keep my 'dor well humidified or my cigars dry out.

Do you really NEED a gallon? Try your local Eckerd or Walgreens. They may have to special order it for you.

RV anti-freeze is PG/water and inexpensive, also readily available. Since it is already mixed with water I wouldn't dilute it 50/50, maybe 75/25. DO NOT use regular automotive anti-freeze; it is POISON. RV anti-freeze is non-toxic and pink in color, but READ THE LABEL as Rain-X sells a windshield washer anti-freeze that is also pink, but poison.

The last time I bought PG was at a local feed/farm store. Chances are, they may not have it in stock but it's a common item that is used in the care and feeding of cows. They'll probably have to order it for you. It's an additive that helps prevent ketosis. Anyway, it goes for less than $20 a gallon and then you can mix it with distilled water for another buck. You end up with a couple of gallons of 50/50 PG for under $21. PG is also used by pharmacists to prepare some prescription medications. I tried to buy some from Eckard drug store and I was told I couldn't get it without a prescription. I understand it varies from area to area if the pharmacists will sell it direct to customers. It's definitely worth a try. Buying those 8oz bottles for $4-5 works out to about $120 -140 per gallon of 100% PG. I think I'm in the wrong business!

I agree. Got some PG from your local pharmacy and mix your own. That way you can get a proper mix too. I use very little PG in my mix because the humidity drops way too low when I do.

I recently purchased 1 gal. of propylene glycol for $10.70 + $10.70 shipping online at www.chemistrystore.com. Bought 1 gal of distilled water at the local grocery for $.99 and mix it 50/50 myself. Have enough now to last me a long long time and the $ I save can go for some great smokes right here at CB.

While we are on the subject, can you guys enlighten me as to why we should even bother with this stuff? I have 5 humidors and one has a PG jar (in a solid state, looks like jell-o) and I regularly add water too it. Anyway, The others use regular distilled water and the one I keep in my office, gets the old water fountain treatment. I notice no differences in any, with the exception that the humidor that has the pg dries up a lot quicker. I hear so much on this stuff and never understand why. bah humbug.

I've only started smoking cigars again for a little over a year and everything I've read stresses the importance of the 70% rule. Anything over and you risk the imfamous blue mold and anything under and your sticks will eventually turn into flavorless kindling. As the cost of our wonderful pastime can be substantial I want to take the minimal amount of risk in storage. What your saying flies in the face of all that I've learned. But that's not to say that I'm not listening. Do your 'dors stay at 70% with just the water or do your smokes do just as well regardless of the humidity?

As important as the 50/50 solution (I buy mine by the pint at a local pharmacy -- the pharmacist is a herfer) is the maintenance of the humidor. While the 50/50 solution need only be added once per quarter, distilled water MUST be added at least monthly, more in dry climates. Depending on the number and size of your humidor(s) and how often it/they are opened, will determine how long a pint of PG will last. With 2 75 count dor's and a 35-quart coolerdor, my pint seems to last almost a year.

Wany, if you don't notice any difference then you probably don't need the PG. I live in the Northeast (Cape Cod, to be exact) and the temp and humididy can swing dramatically. Even though my 'dor and coolerdor is kept closed most of the time, the RELATIVE humidity will change with temperature. I find the 50/50 blend helps keep fluctuations to a minimum.

maybe it's because I never see the humidity in my `dors reach above 75%. I do however have a problem keeping them at 70% at times, especially this time of year when it is dry. But how will PG help me here. If anything it keeps the humidity down not up.

Actually, to get your humidity down (from 75% to 70%) the PG is just the trick. It will absorb the excess moisture over 70%. It's very smart. Like a thermos that knows when to keep things cold and when to keep them hot.
