Greetings everyone. New fella here to CB, and thought I would drop a line or more to say hello and get a few questions out of the way. This forum seems to be extremely friendly, so I figured this would be the best place to start with the messages and such. It also helps I just won a bid on a nice new El Rey humidor. (:

Anyway, I suppose I will get down to the questions. I realize that I need to get my Hydro calibrated, and did the salt test per spec. It sat there, at a little over 50%, after 8 hours. I adjusted the screw on the back so that it would read 75%, but I'm having my doubts on the accuracy on it. Hence the question. Has anyone else gotten a hydro that was WAY OFF but still was reliable? (I've also read on other forums to just do away w/ the analog and get a digital one)

I will say that I have a friend that is going to let me borrow his digital one so that I can test the accuracy. Any clues on how I can setup a 'dry' enviroment to see if it will read a low humidity? I live in the South, and the avg. humidity is usually in the 70's+ this time of year.

I am fairly new to smoking cigars, but have been reading away on reviews. So far I've found that I enjoy Montecristo H2000 No. 2 Especial as well as Royal Butera (can never find em'), but sheesh, my wallet is WAY lighter now. *grin* I just picked up a couple Padron (3000 & 4000 maduro) at the local shop to give them a try. I'll let you know how that goes.. ((:

I'll quit my yackin' now. Thanks in advance for your answers to the humi/hydro question. And feel free to make any suggestions, as this 'newbie' needs all the help he can get.

P.S. This humidor is huge so I am soliciting for any free gar's you want to send my way. *grin*

Aloha auximage,

I had a analog hygrometer on the first humi I owned, I agree, with the others, for $20 just buy a digital. Saved me a whole lot of stress and aggravation. It also may be that you haven’t given your hygrometer enough time to stabilize, I hear it can take much longer than 8 hours sometimes.

If you’re worried about your wallet being lighter now… watch out, you aint seen nothing yet LOL

Good Luck!!

You can get a defective hygrometer (got one myself that stays at 75%). I am looking into a high-end digital one to compare with my analogs.
You still got a wallet?
I will be posting a trade soon you might be interested in.
Welcome! Keep the cutters sharp and make big smoke.

Welcome aboard. Sounds like you have a good plan set up to test your hygo already. Definately hold on to your wallet because CBid is a very bumpy ride.

Analog hygrometers: Decorative and impressive to the less than knowledgeable among your friends ... digital: the way to go if you prefer actual functionality ... but, once you become accustomed to how your cigars feel and smoke when the humidity is right, you can get along fine without one ...

As for the #1 question that you did NOT ask, whether to leave the cello on or take it off before putting the cigars down for their humidor nap, you'll find that either way you choose to go, you'll have a lot of support and a lot of disagreement among the group here ... however, if you choose the cello on option, you'll find that 93% of us agree that you should remove it before lighting your cigar ... of the other 7%, 4% will disagree with absolutely ANYthing and the other 3% don't know what the hell they're talking about ...

SteveS, once again, "Words of wisdom, Steve, words of wisdom"!

Also, the best humidors are made from choice hardwoods....chuckle, grin, and too true to realize.

Thanks for the welcome guys. An update on the humi situation. I got the digital one from a friend, and it is registering around 63% (the analog one reads 68%). Only 5% off, but I think I'll go ahead and get a digital one.

And thanks for the advice on the cellophane, I'm sure it might affect the taste a bit.

Well, payday's coming this Thursday, so I guess I should start a biddin' on some gars'..... ((:
