Bidding question

Just curious if anyone else has notice this. I'm not criticizing anyones bidding techniques. I'm just wondering if I'm missing something obvious.

I've noticed a few times that some people's initial bid on lots are extremely high. There are multiple quantities available on the item, but a person bids much higher than the "bid to win". I've always thought that is what the auto-bid feature was for. In particular, I saw one lot where a person bid $20 for a 5-pack when the current bid to win was only $7. I doubt the lot would go any higher than $12-$15.

Like I said, I'm not criticizing anyone. They can do what they want with their hard-earned $$$$. I'm just wondering if I'm overlooking something.

Having been guilty of this once or twice, I can say that it's the result of a brain lapse. Thinking that I put the higher amount on the auto-bid line, I realized just after pressing enter that I had put it on the bid line. My guess is that this explains at least some of those seemingly unwarranted high bids.

Nope ... I attribute it to human nature, being what it is. I've noticed that some people decide on a set price they are willing to pay ... and they just bid that.

... takes out all the guess work! They figure that if they bid high enough to start with, they aren't likely be outbid. Or ... they've played the auto-bid game, and were contantly outbid on an item, saw what they usually win at, and just bid that price.

I guess they don't want to take their chances with the auto-bid feature ... and just want to see their name at the top of the list.

I'm sure there are as many reasons ... in direct relation ... to as many people who do that ... LOL!

I've made the same mistake
that gerber mentioned several
times myself.

Just a brain fart.

Got in a rush once and did that by accident. Click and scroll is deadly if you do not watch it. Luckily someone went into a bidding frenzy and got me off the hook.
And what ya'll said.

Fatshotbud

exactly why i ended up bidding up to $32. for a 5 pack.
when i scrolled down to place the bid, i had also scrolled a higher maximum bid.

Tab - scroll - click; tab - scroll - click.
Did not know Bad Frogs came in 5 packs - LOL.
I prefer the term "over zealous" to "brain fart".
Cerebral flatuation?

I have made all of the mentioned mistakes. This is particularly easy if you haven't placed a bid in a while. Fortunately, I'm a "value oriented" bidder. I've been bid over every time(whew)!

I've made the same mistakes, but I'm a value bidder like xrundog. Some lots I don't bother with the autobid, because I know I won't win with my set maximum. Ex: I bid on most of the CAO Brazilias lots (still haven't tried one of those bad boys), but I have yet to win one with my set max. Someday, I'll get lucky... or raise my max....or I'll breakdown and buy them at retail (most of the winning bids on the Brazilias approach retail anyways). But then again, that would take all the fun out it......

What gerber said. I've done that once myself. Never again I swear.....I hope.

Slim,

If you use the auto bid and bid early, isn't yours the priority bid as folks keep driving you up? That's what I've noticed. Definitely the way to go.

I've made the mistake of thinking I was using autobid when in fact it was a straight bid I was actually making. This seems to happen more often when I start bidding while engaging in alcohol consumption. Don't really know if there is a correlation though.....
