During an uncharacteristic flurry of ambition and energy, we decided to clean out and repack the tons of junk we have in the garage, and I ran across my old pipe smoking stuff. I thought I had thrown it all out. I'd like to start smoking them again (two nice briars and a meerschaum), but after 20 odd years, I don't even remember what I liked. If anybody has any favorite pipe tobaccos to recommend (full flavored, of course), I'll soon be ready to start sampling. Thanks...

cigarick-

I don't know where you live, but out here in central Cali, I've found about three tobacco shops that have some great custom or house blends. And some of them will even blend different tobaccos to suit your taste.
I usually try to find a good blend of vanilla and dark cavendish or a good, strong Virginia burly.
If you're looking for pre-packaged stuff, the old stand-by, Captain Black is consistent. Pretty mellow, but it's like going to McDonalds, it's going to taste the same no matter where you are.

Try Captain Black ... or Flying Dutchman ... or the the Savinelli Armonia ... Frog Morton is always a safe bet.

There are a number of McClelland bulk blends that I liked a lot and if you have a local tobacconist, would be easy to sample in small quantities. I would recommend 5100 (VA blend), 2015 (VA/perique blend), 2040 and 2045 (both Oriental blends). Most of the Dunhill blends are very good, I would recommend 965 Mix, Durbar and Nightcap for some good English blends (Durbar is a balkan blend).

I use to smoke a pipe (many, many years ago) and one I really enjoyed was Flying Dutchman.

It contains no less than 12 different tobaccos, selected from all over the world. The final result is a blend which ensures a cool and even burning smoke with a pleasant and mild fragrance.

I've gotta second Slim's nomination of the 2015 - VA/perique blend

that was my favorite for years when I smoked a pipe ...

Thanks, guys! The Cap't. Black and McClelland both come up frequently in Google. I live in southern Calif, but I have a friend up in Santa Maria. I just might have to wander over to my local tobacconist's and see what he's got. I usually jet right by the pipe stuff on the way into the roomidor, but not today!

Cigarick,

Go to your local tobacconists and talk to him about what you like. He should be able to get you some small samples for you to try at a nominal cost. That is the best way to try out tobacco in my mind. I found a good mellow vanilla blend at a tobaconists at the mall that is very good and mellow.

It's just like cigars, try and try again until you find what you like.

Good luck!

Ah, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do, huh? I almost always try to split boxes with a buddy because I get bored with one cigar after half a dozen or so. I did go to my tobacconist this morning, and asked which was their most popular blend. He said, "Here, let me give you a pipeful to try. If you like it, come back and buy some." He gave me a good half-ounce of the stuff! Love that place...

That's cool. I went back and forth for 20 years smoking on and off. I found most times I went to a tobacco shop to look for interesting blends, the tobacconist (is that a real word? oh well) would put a few pinches in baggies to sample.
One of my favorites was a Jack Daniels flavor cavendish.

Come to think of it, I might have to bust out the old briars. Maybe I'm old enough now not to look ridiculous smoking a pipe.

Alaskan Gold and Blue Note are two of the best.

Treat yourself to a can of Rattray's Red Raparee--hands down the best pipe tobacco I've ever had. Full-flavored and a complexity of tastes that will boggle your mind. You won't be disappointed in this one!
