What is it with these yahoos (pardon the expression) who bid on lots hours, even days before they close?? I'm not against Cbid making a profit, but most of them drop off before they close anyway, and all it does is drive the price up for the rest of us.

Why ?? Do you wait till last minute and then place the bid?? Like to see people getting knocked out???

If I see something I want, I place the bid... WHENEVER... 2 min after opening... 2 min before closing...

If you get in early and set your max bid for what you are willing to pay, if it gets close at the end, you have seniority and others that bid after you get bumped first...

And I don't know what you mean by driving up the price?? Do you think it stays at $1 until YOU are READY to bid???

I like the guys who wait until the last minute. I am happy to see them forced to outbid me.

I like it even more when they bid higher than retail.

I guess that makes me a yahoo???

Rick,

Sorry to say this but that has got to be one of the dumbest statements I've ever heard. I look at the stuff opening everyday and if I want something, I bid my max when the auction opens. That way I have senority up to my max. This stategy has worked great for me so far.

Why does a poker player open with a nothing hand? The principle is the same. If a bidder uses the autobid function, the only way to find out the max limit of his bid is to place a bid of your own. (ie "calling" his bid). That can discourage hit and run bids. Second, most bidders on this board understand the fair market price of most commonly available items and/or compare what CI lists five packs at, and would likely bid the item to an average price anyway. In other words, the reason you can't get the Ashton Sampler for $20 is not because of the early bidders. It's because bidders know that it retails (mail order) for $75, and adjust the bids up or down accordingly. However, there's nothing wrong with throwing a $20 bid at it just in case everyone else goes fishin' that weekend.
Sincerely,
One of the yahoos.

If you see something you want, bid your max price and move on.

If you win, great.

If you don't, get over it.

It's an auction. Treat it as such.

Sorry cigarick, but what Low said!

It's an auction site.

And if cbid sold are their 5-packs
& boxes for a buck, they'd be outa business.

I must agree with HarleyDave (not to be mean or too insulting to CigarRick) but that was a pretty dumb statement. Most of my best deals I have gotten on Cbid are from early bids.

Rick, you should read what autobid is all about and understand the concept of it. The early bird gets the Bucs!

Oh I miss the days of people getting Slim-slapped. Come on Slim, one more for old time sakes!

What the hell are you talking about?

1st bidder get's priority and will often pay less than other winners in a multiple item lot upon closing.

Sorry Rick. You just caught me off guard with that one.

Boy, lots of early bidders here. I thought that was just my strategy. Bid as lots open, figure out what you'll pay up to and accept the consequenses. I guess if you just got to have a certain lot at any price then you might revise to a late bidding strategy. However, very few things here merit that consideration from me. I'm also noticing that the real hot items sometimes get bid up almost to Cigars International mail order prices or other sources.

I'm with Low and everyone else on this one. I always bid early when a lot opens. It just makes more sense to me. Especialy when there are multiple lots.

Mr Maven, ;-)

I was not referring to you. While I don't agree with your politics, I would not say the way you express your ideas is dumb in any way.

Also I guess I was a little harsh on Cigarrick, but it was the first thing that came to mind.

Agree with the majority...get in early and put up your max...if you win...oh yeah...if you dont...oh well, you have a bench-mark for the next time that auction type comes up...

Yep. Bid early for the best price and seniority. Bid late if You have to have it and price is secondary. I've gotten some terrific deals on early bids during an off week when other bidders are laying low.

> Do you wait till last minute and then place the bid??

Works every time.

> Like to see people getting knocked out???

No, I like to win bids.

> Do you think it stays at $1 until YOU are READY to bid???

Did I say I thought that? That is a great idea, though. Why don't you see what you can set up for me.

> I like the guys who wait until the last minute. I am happy to see them forced to outbid me.
> I like it even more when they bid higher than retail.

I always check retail before placing a bid.

> Sorry to say this but that has got to be one of the dumbest statements I've ever heard.

LOL! Ouch, that hurt. The correct way to punctuate a sentence like that is with a period after the word 'sorry.'

> I bid my max when the auction opens.

It seems to me that it can just as easily close with everyone else bidding much lower than you. I don't call that 'winning.'

> Second, most bidders on this board understand the fair market price of most commonly available items

Then how do you account for the frequent, arrogant, pointless posts that say, "Look how much this idiot overbid!"?

> And if cbid sold are their 5-packs & boxes for a buck, they'd be outa business.

I never suggested that they should.

> Also I guess I was a little harsh on Cigarrick, but it was the first thing that came to mind.

No apology needed. I always consider the source. In all honesty, I skimmed over the Autobid thing when I first logged on, so I appreciate the few who took the time to explain the 'bid early' strategy. The rest of you aren't worth the pus in the pimples on my flabby white ass.

Setting your max at first bid doesn't allow others to get it much lower than you. It will only go up to your max in the increments stated, so you will only end up paying maybe 1-2 dollars more.

Hey, to each his own...

You talked about driving up the price... If you bid at the last minute, aren't YOU paying the highest price ??
If others wanted to bid that high, their auto bids would have been set for a higher amount !! So possibly you're overpaying...

Low

PS.. I'll see what I can do about keeping everything at $1 till you're ready to bid...

PSS.. Working out a little will help your "flabby white ass" problem.. :o)

2 cents Worth: I think it is a matter of the Items being placed for sale in a method chosen buy the Owner of said items and of the buyers making up thier minds what items they whish to have and just what they whish to pay for it. Be it over a retail price or whole sale price or for a BUCK. If an item isn't worth $100 to you then you don't bid. If you can buy that item for $40 dollars some where else then do that..Not being a Wise A-$$ I say this because I dealt with a person all day yesterday that thought I shold sell some thing at the price he wanted and ship it at the price he wanted, Seems like most people lately are forgetting if you don't like the way things are going where you are trying to buy then Simply go some where else it's not your's and you have NO say over how it is handled until you Own it.. C-Bid has never been any thing but fair to me and to Many Others that have elected to buy in here. They need to make money to keep going as we all do No matter What business we are in and if There are people out there who will pay to much for an item then so be it..It's not like there aren't umpteen Million site's to check prices at.hahahahaha. I also have felt bad when a bid on some thing I really wanted was lost to someone who I knew was paying to much got it. I also at times have payed to much for some thing but it is called pay back for the great way I have been treated while I have been here.. (Wait), (Watch), And then one Day (Win). THE 3 W'S..I hope NO one takes this wrong but a posting such as this sure seems to stir things up but if we stop and put a problem into a form of a question instead of trying to down grade others we usually get a better responce and ever one feels better.. Sorry just had to say it..YOU WIN A FEW AND YOU LOSE A FEW ...Such is life.. TinMan..Soap Box Removed..Thank You..

Not getting defensive, Bud... just pointing out that each person has their own method of bidding... We are all adults, we know what we are doing and we all have a method to our madness... That's what makes this a fun auction. Everyone seems to do what's right for them... Bid early, bid late... But we all have one thing in common... BID, BID, BID !!! LOL

My input.....For an auction to occur, a minimum of two people must want the same thing; the price is determined by which one(s) wants it more. Sometimes I will place my max bid on an item that is being bid on by proxy and it does drive the price up, beyond my max. However, if my bid is already max I won't bid on that item again in the same auction. I generally do bid early but it is more costly for me as it is more difficult to let an item go for only $1, $3, 5$, etc., more rather than waiting until the price already bid is beyond my max. In retrospect, the above is an extremly contorted juxtaposition of words. Does what I said, rather the manner in which I said it, make any sense to anyone?

P.S. You mean everyone doesn't have pustules on their ass?

It's an auction...

Sometimes you 'win' an auction sometimes you don't.

Bidding time and amount are a personal choice.

How about a bid like this one:

Me thinks JB from Chicago did not see the word "5 pack".

And he is winning on all three lots!
OUCH!!
That may be the overbid to beat all overbids.
$85 for a box of 25 at CI. He'll get 15 sticks for 50% more.

Of course, perhaps he'll save on the shipping...
