do people feel compelled to attack others? Why can people simply not enjoy cigars, state their opinions, and debate with each other without name calling?

I've been guilty of this somewhat in the past myself, but one of the differences between people and animals is our ability to learn and modify.

I think some people get a lift out of personally criticizing others. i.e., you're a "insert you favorite invective here". There, whew, I feel better, I'm sure you don't but that was my point!

Isn't that a bit pathetic? The need to stand on the backs of others to make yourself feel better?

I think this is a stupid sissy post. You are an idiot for posting such tripe. You should be banned. That's all I've got to say.

Oh yeah, have a nice day too.

Your a loser and I'm better than you. I can tell by the way you type the letter a you're younger than me so therefore you know nothing. You should never speak because everything you say will be wrong. Why are you still alive?

Berating belittling attitude can be tiresome. Bullyish attitudes (on the internet, please!)is childish and really not needed.
A lack of respect for fellow man is unfortunatley a common problem that the initiaters look upon with apathy.
Sad little world they live in.

I like that double-dumbass remark too; I'm gonna use it for a while; thanks Rick.

Robby, people do it because they know they can. A lot of it has to do with no respect or just the need to argue or belittle others. A lot of it has to do with the bar fight mentality; several get into it and others feel the need to jump in "just because" or they might just like to fuel the fire so to speak. Personally, I work very very hard at letting it go. And with the years steadily increasing behind me, it seems to get easier--especially on the internet. In my day to day, I'm working even harder at not letting people get under my skin. And I feel the better for it. It's damn difficult but my patience is thickening up a bit.

Hehehe pretty funny. Seriously though? What's wrong with simply stating your opinion and or disagreeing with someone else's?

The person I think I admire most in this respect is RickA. He is diametrically apposed to me on many many issues and many other folks here as well. He takes a pounding most of the time, but he always addresses the question at hand and refrains from personal remarks. I respect that and have learned from it.

"Double Dumb-ass on you"... That's an old remark coined in a Star Trek movie.

Much of my professional work involves research and analysis of online threaded conversations. I look at numbers and metrics rather than content. However I do look at a lot of online forums, some web-bases, but mostly on the Usenet. We term the back and forth sharing of insults as "Flame wars" and their initiators as "Flamers"

What I love about Cbid forum is the general lack of Flamers out here. Cigar newsgroups on Usenet, by comparison are much more filled with Flamers and Flame wars, preventing me from participating in that group. OK sometimes, we have our disagreements and ocassional jabs and pokes on Cbid. Often, one poster's attempt at humor is not recognized by their responders. But often things do seem to get resolved when differences occur. Keeping an tone of mutual respect among most of our posters has made this forum the enjoyable cyber place that it is. As an avid cigar smoker, I'd like to keep it that way.

(Use Flames for lighting up cigars not cigar forums!!!)
