Do "spiced" and "flavored" age?

I have been enjoying the Drew Estate lines of smokes lately, and have been stocking up on a lot of their "spiced" and "flavored" lines, when a question was put to me, for which I did not have an answer, I am hoping I may find an opinion or two from the forum. :-)

Do "spiced" and/or "flavored" cigars benefit from aging? Now, I am sure the Natural, IP, and Mayorga lines greatly benefit from some down time, but how about flavored smokes?

In my mind they may not benefit from aging, since their flavors may get stale or even worse change??? Also, what is the best way to store all these different sticks, they cannot be mixed, so do I need a humi for each line!?!?!? Crazy!?

What are your thoughts on the matter...

Thanks,

PT ;-)

You can store all of your Acids and Ambrosia cigars together, in the same humidor. This will actually return them to their original environment, in which they were made. I was told that you can store your Naturals with your Acids, but I feel better storing my Naturals with my traditional cigars.

Don't worry, flavors cannot go stale. All flavored cigars can lose flavor over time, and different methods are now used to increase the shelf-life of flavored cigars. But, Acid is not a flavored cigar, it is an aromatic cigar.

Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly is the difference between a flavored cigar and an aromatic cigar?

THANKS!!!

Aromatic cigars focus on the aroma of a cigar, while flavored cigars focus on flavor :)

Ditto above
I have a designated humi just for Aromatics. The aging should improve the flavor and burn of the blended filler but, I really can not give an educated answer on the other part of the question.

Just my 2 cents worth here Pete; What I have found as of late getting into the Drew Line (Big Time) The ones that I have taken out of thier box seem to me to lose some what over the ones left in thier box. So what I have been doing is Making a hole in the stack of Cigars (By smoking a Few heheheh) Then adding a humidifer (Small) and storing them that way and when I open the Box they smell just like the 1st day.. And if you need a Box or two then let me know and next time we do a trade it will come your way Humidifer Included..TinMan..And yes I have stored the ACID Stuff together and It seems to work just fine..

TinMan. Interesting point. But you have to remember, the aroma that you smell when you open a new box is a combination of the cigars, box, and loose tobacco. Naturally, the aroma wouldn't be as strong if you're smelling just the cigars :)

This is true I guess my idea is that if they stay in that enviorment then they will retain the same integrity a month or 2 after opening as the day they were opened since they stay in the enviorment they started in. Oppps sorry think me spell'n slipped alittle there..Just My thought not saying it's right or wrong..I'll know for sure a few more months down the line since me doing a little test about this very same thing..I started it last month because I had the same question..Tin

TinMan, I think you're right, definitely. A lot of people keep the loose tobacco that they collect from Acid boxes, and throw it all in a cooler or box, which they use to store their Acids. I would definitely agree that this assists the cigars in 'keeping' their aromatic attributes.

I've even talked to people who store cheap traditional cigars in the same cooler for long periods of timeto create their own Acids.

I haven't been smoking long enough for any of my cigars to lose their aroma, but I have smoked almost everything Drew makes and I believe they will lose their aroma over time. The tobacco itself will probably get better with age, but it seems natural that the aroma will leave the cigar in the same way it got in the cigar in the first place. They hang the tobacco in rooms where the walls are filled with the scents. That seems like it would reverse if not controlled. Just don't try to get a stock of more than a years smokes.

I also have a seperate humidor and cooler for my aromatics. I keep a short supply in the humidor and the rest is still in their boxes in the cooler.. packing included. I would never store them with my regulars. I store my Naturals with regualr stuff, though.

But then I also store my maduros seperate from my naturals, etc, etc. I guess I'm a bit retentive about that.

Thanks for reminding me of a GREAT song Octo!

Playing it as we "speak"!

I've had some of the Lars Tetens Asadachi's that simply were marvelous with about 2 years age on them. I smoke a "flavored" cigar about once a month. Not a huge fan of them, but I like them once in awhile.

The "knockoffs" that are here(Phatboys) are decent with age too. I notice that they're not a "pungent" if aged. I wouldn't know with Acids as I buy 'em and smoke 'em on the spot. I don't really keep a seperate humi for them, those are reserved to a rubbermaid-dor!

I find that when I store flavored cigars they get too much moisture.
Maybe I shouldn't have flushed...

The only Acids I've had are the blondies and I think they can be a nice change of pace. I would occasionally pick them up as singles and not store them at all, then I got a good price on a 5-pack here a while back. I've had 2 of them so far and they both have seemed to have less aroma and flavor than the singles. When the other 3 are gone, I'll go back to getting them as singles. Partly because it's a bit of a pain to have an acid-only humi and partly because they seem a bit more enjoyable to me right out of the box.

just my thoughts.

Lenny4z, I totally agree! I seem to enjoy them right ou of the box! This is what led me to question if they would be better with age. They are all going to get in their own rubbermaidodors this weekend.

I have also started to enjoy the CAO Bella Vanilla Petit Coronas and the other little CAOs. Really good smokes, and just enough flavor without the nasty after taste.

But, after about 2/3 through, they tend to get slightly bitter. I think the oils build up and get into the smoke. Anyone else have this issue with flavored smokes???

Thanks for all the input gents!!!

The aromas in the Acid cigars will fade over time. The cigars are ready to smoke when you buy them, and there really will never be a better time. It's called volitility, I think. Same things happens to your solid room fresheners, the one in your car shaped like a tree, and the potpourri your wife has around the house.
