International Travel with smokes - opinions please

Hello everyone - I've been wrestling with the question of whether or not to take some 'gars in my 20 stick humi with me to Australia next week. I am going to be working down there for about 8 weeks and don't own a travel humi. Also, I'm not sure if there are international rules about bringing tobacco products on the plane with you between countries - you know, import/export duties, etc. On the bright side, there are a few good shops in Canberra, the city I'll be working in, from what I've heard. But I also hate to leave my smokes at home (all economically purchased on Cbid, of course) and instead be forced to buy them out there if I don't have to.

Any thoughts from the international travelers among us? Is it worth the trouble or should I just suck it up and buy my smokes out there? I just don't want a big hassle if you know what I mean.

Comments appreciated.

I have always taken my cigars with me. Most times they have never bothered with me over them. One time going to the united kingdom I had a bunch confiscated because I was over what I could bring in. (I forgot how many that was though.) You can check with your travel agent or airline to find out the limit if any on the country your going to.

Most countries let you bring at least a box. Hey your American Dollar is like 2x the Aussie buck, you could smoke ISOM's the whole time your there. Bring some Bands with you that clearly say something like Dominican and bring a box of those havana's back.

Gideon,

Not that you were planning to do this but do not bring a cutter or lighter with you. They will likely be confiscated. I had a domestic flight where this happened to me. Luckily my girlfriend was with me and I was able to give them to her to take home. Otherwise, I would have lost my favorite cutter.

You put your cutter in your checked luggage. It is the carry on stuff that they want no sharp objects in. Lighters I think are a no no anywhere. You can find matches and anything you want when you get there.

You are going to have a herf fit on that 15 hour flight. Bring some chew...LOL

You're not going to Siberia. I think you will find cigars, smoke shops and everything you need there. Probably even in the airport.

Yes Rocco, I leave this weekend.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I'm looking forward to enjoying a few ISOMs while I'm away and taking a small handful of old favorites with me for the journey.

Happy smokin' everyone.

A friend of mine had his lighter confiscated from his checked luggage. Go figure.

My experience with lighters has been that a "torch flame" light will be confiscated from your pocket or a carry-on. It is considered by Airport Security/Customs to be capable of being used as a weapon. However, I have never had one confiscated in my checked baggage. In traveling internationally I haven't had a problem with my cigars going over; I have had a problem coming back, if Customs suspect they are Cuban. A tip: I have found the CigarCaddy to be an excellent way to transport cigars safely in checked luggage. One caveat, when you arrive at your destination don't be surprised if you have to use significant force to prize it open. The changing pressure in the aircraft, particularly in checked baggage will seal it tightly shut, to the point you will hear a distinct "hiss" when you open it (like a can of coffee or any other vacuum-sealed item). Hope this helps some. Enjoy your trip.
