In the now closed thread, I suggested that perhaps the dispute could be mediated by a mutually acceptable neutral party ... got a response from JD saying he was "not sure what there is to mediate" ... and in thinking about that, I've decided he might be right ...
What needs to happen is that both guys need to stop ... not stop for the afternoon, not for 24 hours, not until next Tuesday, but stop ... completely.
It it quite possible and even desireable that we be able to speak freely with one another ... doing so does not demand we see eye to eye ... it does not requre we express no differences of opinion ...
It requires that we do so as gentlemen ...
I've said before, but will say again ... IF we were all face to face in a large hall and having discussions going on among clusters of guys in various parts of the room, we would not say some of the things we are somehow willing to say here with the Internet to shield us from looking at the person or people with whom we are speaking and having them look at us ...
Somehow, despite the fact we "know" one another to a limited extent, the anonymity of the Internet allows us to say with imagined impugnity, things we would never say face to face ...
So, whatever your topic of discussion, whatever your viewpoint might be, with whomever you find yourself interacting, and however goofy, animated or spirited your 'conversation' might become, imagine that you are sitting or standing next to that person or that group of people and speaking face to face ... and conduct yourself accordingly ...
Frankly, if a person cannot bring themselves to that minimal level of conduct, I'd rather not associate with them and am forthrightly and candidly asking that they take their act elsewhere ... there are freewheeling, cigar-focused forums that will tolerate this sort of thing well ... go there and stay ...
