Well, Charleston WV is nearly a smoke free city. I lived there for over 3 years until I moved about 1 hr north. My girlfriend still lives there as does most of my friends. I still spend a lot of time there. Spending July 4th there as a matter of fact. Bummer that we wont be able to enjoy some gars after a nice dinner out. We'll have to take it to the bars instead.

Interesting that the businesses that do allow smoking will have to post a sign on their doors. A snippet of the news article is below.

Smokers will have to light up elsewhere

Kanahwa County smoking ban goes into effect July 2nd

Smokers beware...just one week left to enjoy a cigarette at the dinner table. That's when the Kanawha county smoking ban goes into effect.

On Wednesday public areas, including 15 feet in front of a public enterance, will be smoke free. That leaves bars, dog and horse racetracks, gaming centers and retail tobacco stores smoker havens.

TGI Friday's already has a note on the front door saying they will be a smokefree restaurant beginning July 2nd. While the manager believes it will have an effect on business, a smoker says the ban is wrong.

Those business which will allow smoking must also place a notice on the front door stating that smoke is present and that second hand smoke may lead to cancer.

The rules go into effect on Wednesday, July 2nd in Kanawha County.

puskarich,

I realize that you did not express militant feelings about this issue nor appeal to the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, or God-given human rights regarding smoking in public places. However, as someone who is at least mildly inconvenienced by this smoking ban (which is similarly in place in Waco, TX), I would like to understand more of how such bans are so offensive to some folks. Though you may not share such offense, could you or others on the forum give me the "anti-smoking ban" perspective?

I cant say that I ever get too worked up about much, nor do I think the smoking ban is the end of the world. The only think I'm bummed about is that there are some nice restaurants that we used to frequent for dinner and then retire to the lounge area for a nice cigar. We cant do that now. I was never ever one to light up right at the dinner table. I was always for heading to a separate room to smoke. IMHO, they should find a way to still allow that. I think the laws are more for protecting the employees than the patrons, though.

The town I currently live in has an awesome coffee shop that also sells cigars. A lot of great people hang out there to smoke a cigar and gulp down a cup-a-joe. Since it would probably not be considered primarily a tobacco shop, if this ban were to expand into a neighboring county, my favorite gathering place for a nice smoke will be gone. I'll be forced to hang out with the 21-year old kids in the gangsta rap bars or smoke out in the back yard. hahaahahah. Not that I'm uncool enough for the gangsta rap bars, though. WORD YO!!!

Yeah, here in Waco, a restaurant can have a smoking section if they close it in (and have its own ventilation system, I think), but not very many establishments are doing it. The bars are still ok to smoke and some have designated themselves a bar after 9pm or so in order to open the whole establishment to smoking. What gets me are the bars that don't mind cigarettes but won't allow pipes and cigars. NEVER understood that one.

My city Edmonton, AB went smoke free July 1, even in bars. The only exceptions are Casino's and Bingo. They will be Smoke free in 2005. Only place to do it here is in the back yard, car and Horse Races/Casino.

My city Minot, ND is smoke free in all restaurants. Bars are still open for smoking, as long as the majority of their business comes from booze. A restaurant can still have a smoking section, but it has to have a completely seperate ventilation system from the rest of the restaurant and it must be completely enclosed. We just got back from a week in the Deadwood/Sturgis/Rapid City area, and in Rapid City it seemed like all restaurants were smoke free. Don't know if it was a law, or was just the way it was. Honestly, I don't care if a restaurant is smoke free, as I usually don't smoke cigars in them anyway. And it is kind of nice not having anyones stinking cigarette smoke blowing in your face.
