I'm in Georgia and can't buy beer on Sunday at the store. Have to go to a bar and buy one if I want one. I've been cleaning my garage in high heat and humidity and could REALLY use a cold one and a cigar. Looks like I'll have to head up the road to the local pub... Why in 2003 in the US should I not be able to buy a stinking beer on Sunday?

I'm a conservative, and I'd NEVER vote in such stupid legislation! If you don't like it...do something about it! Even Prohibition was repealed.

Robby...got a bottle opener? I can't get the top off of my beer...help!

I live in a "wet" county. Used to live in a "dry" county (no legal alcohol sales at all). I feel the major difference is, although you can't buy alcohol on Sunday in a "wet" county because of the "blue" laws, in a "dry" county you can buy alcohol on Sunday or any other time at your local bootlegger's house.

In Michigan, you can buy liquor on Sunday, but not until after 12:00 pm. If you're standing in line at the store, and it's 11:59, you have to wait until 12;00. I've never understood that one.

"it's the letter of the law."

very important to understanding laws. if the law reads 12:00, 11:59 is as illegal as 10:15.

we are accustomed to getting a pass if we are responsive and courteous to a police officer when stopped for speeding. the officer uses a little street justice and gives you a pass, but 66 in a 65 is against the law.

the question is how could you run out of beer. it's a basic staple, like air.

It's called "a wife". According to HER blue lays, I can only get buzzed on Friday night... But she was gone, and I BUSTED A$$ cleaning the garage, mowing the yard, and I was "jonesin" for a beer... I had to go to the local bar and grill. Although, I didn't have anything from the grill :-) Oh well, 20$ six pack! CONSERVATIVES SUCK!! Weeeee!!!!

Rick, I understand about the letter of the law. I just don't believe that the law itself serves a valid purpose.

Robby,

My guess is, your house is big enough to hide a mini refrigerator. Get with it man! Learn from this experience. This must never happen again!!!

BTW, I'm nursing a slight hangover. =)

Blue Laws suck. They were put in place becauce the bible thumpers thought they knew what was best for everyone.

I live near Dallas and when I got here the Blue Laws were in full force. You'd go the the grocery store on Sundays and the beer section was chained off. They had isles roped off for products they could not sell.

Interesting, you could go the the hardware store and buy a hammer, but no nails. You could buy an aluminum ladder but not a wooden one. You could buy cheese but not a cheese slicer. Go figure.

The malls were closed all day. Even now the car lots are required by law to be closed one day a week. Most places opt to stay closed on Sundays, which make the bible thupmers happy I am sure. There are still some stores that stay closed all day.

I have noticed that since the early 80's the laws have relaxed a bit. Due in part because of us Yankees moving down here. We pitched a fit loud enough the lay makers had to listen.

There are still "wet" and "dry" areas unfortunetly.
You have to have a membership card to get a beer or any alcoholic beverage. A huge problem was that you had to have a membership card for every restaurant or bar you went to and at ~$5 each it got expensive. Even if you went to a chain restaurant the card was good only at the location it was issued at.

They finally came up with a UniCard which was good every where, one card one fee. That was until restaurants stopped accepting them and again mandated you had their card.

Since Texas is deep in the heart of the bible belt and actually I think this is where the buckle of the belt is, things will suck for quite a while.

Here in Pa., while We have the FINEST cigar shop available, We have no liquor stores. Well, kind of. We have "State Stores". The state Gov. sells the booze. Because of that they have limited hours and no competitive selection. The one in Your town is the same as almost every other one in the state. I've heard that in the cities they have larger "hub" stores but who wants to drive 50 miles for only a slighty better selection and still no competition driven sales or selection? That's for liquor and wine. Now for beer it's cases only at a beer warehouse. Want a six pack? Sold only in taverns at $6+.
If You step outside CI's shop in Bethlehem You'll find a fountain erected by the W.C.T.U. 100 years later they're gone but not forgotten.

This is a clear separation issue and I'm having separation anxiety... Why should the government care if I'm buying beer on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday? etc... What's different about Sunday? Should Jews not be allowed to by beer or Saturday? Or maybe it's ok, if they walk to the store? This just seems so backwards to me. I wish my house was bigger or I had a basement so I could hide a stash :-) unfortunately, it's cozy suburban living (1800 sq ft, no basement...)

State run liquor here in Wa, closed on sundays. Sin taxes, booze, tabacco and... gasoline, are the highest in the country. Too many bible thumpers, and tree huggers here!

rastusmcnair - same goes for NH.

Liquor stores run by the NH State Liquor Commission. Beer and wine are sold in grocery stores and convenience stores (7 days a week - no alcohol sales past 10pm).

About half of New Hampshire's 71 State Liquor Store Outlets are open on Sundays. Those stores that are open Sundays are located along major routes of travel throughout the state (why not sell liquor right off the major highways?!). Sunday store hours vary by location but are generally between 10:00am and 5:00pm. It's nice - they even have inventory listings for every store online. You want a bottle of Glenfiddich Ancient RSV 18-Yr Single Mlt - you go online and see if the store near you has it in stock.

I live in MA, right on the border of NH. All the MA towns bordering NH are allowed to open on Sunday (if they want) for X # of hours to help stay competitive with the NH state liquor outlets and grocery stores, etc. In return, they have to close shop another day (usually Monday) for X # of hours. I still drive to NH because it's so close and their prices are great....

No blue laws - just a blue liver from all that drinking I did yesterday (Sunday)

Funjohnny

OK, Robbie, You need to keep an emergency 6 pack in one of your coolerdors, safely hidden by boxes of cigars. When needed, you pop them into the freezer for half an hour and you're set.

In good old California, we could buy beer wine or liquor 24/7 from local stores to the grocery store. I’ve lived or visited many places between her, South Carolina, and California, most of them had blue laws and or all sorts of goofy time date rules for alcohol sales.

I think about that when people whine about California.

The key word here Gene363, is 'could' ...

... not anymore ... at least not anywhere I've been in California, and I've lived here most of my life ...

I was pondering this...Robby, do you have any cigar stranded freinds that would "trade" a cigar or two for a six-pack or 5-6 fingers of whatever twirls your beeny?

Gotta be someone that would love to rummage through the rubbermaid in exchange for a couple of coldies...

If only ya lived closer...Who knows you might've stopped me from drinking that WHOLE 6 pack...by myself!

It was very hard to do, but I was willing to sacrifice myself, so nobody else here would have to go through the agony of opening and drinking all that beer, somebody's gotta do it.

2:00-6:00 AM are the no liquor sales, witching hours in the good ol' golden state. That's 20/7. Not like Vegas, but I feel pretty good listening to all of your sob stories.

Can't balance the budget, but at least we can buy booze relatively easily. Got our priorities straight!

i agree with you. i can understand oregan's law that you can only buy liquor in a state store, i don't know about beer. that way all the profits go to the state and is used hopefully for the good of all. also the control is better.

1800 square is a big house. the ones built here in the 50's were all 1001 square feet. you live in a mansion.

jews don't drink much alcohol. we tend to drink tea in a glass with a spoon in it and a sugar cube in our mouths. i'm reform so i drink amstel lite. i have been known to go through a 6 pack during the summer months.

vegas has some of the best libraries you will find anywhere. i think their schools rank right near the top. only the bagel stores close early. home depot is open all night. i can't think of a place that doesn't sell booze 24/7. so drink all you want, and you can read current books without waiting 3 months. and look how well they do for the school kids.

enough of me on this post or ai'll be responding to my own posts.
