Hade a smoke today that will remain unnamed for now. Anyway I was straightening out a crooked burn with my torch lighter when parts of the ash melted and curled up into little balls. The smell was a bit like burning plastic. And ya, there was no cello on. This is freaking me out a bit. The smoke is from a reputable brand although it could be fake. Also it didn't taste right either, kind of smokey/hickery.

I thought maybe a build up of tar or something. I tried fireing up the ash on some other smokes sitting in the ashtray on my deck and could not replicate this. Anyone have an explanation for this.

limoric - I know exactly what it is...Once one of you gars are attacked by this dreaded disease unless you take immediate and unhesitant action you will loose your entire humidor. There is only one cure, you have to ship the entire contents of your humi(s) to someone overseas within a 3 day period. Plus, you have to mail them on the third Saturday of the month. Oh, I just noticed that would be this Saturday and since I live overseas I will volunteer to help you with this terrible burden. =)

Never had this happen to me before. Sorry, can't help you =)

Regards,

B

Limoric, I had a similar experience about a year ago. I was smoking a Kelner second and could tell after a few puffs that something was not right. The smell was kinda like burning plastic and no...the cello was off. I put the cigar out and during the snuff, the end of the cigar revealed part of a rubber band. It turned out to be about 2" long. I guess the rollers have bundles of tobacco leaf held together by rubber bands, and one just happened to get rolled up in the filler. Can't say what your problem was, did you do an autopsy?

I have had a similar experence with a Flora de Philipinas where there was also a rubber band rolled into the cigar. Unfortunally I had already taken a good size inhale of the burning material before I found it. Needless to say it has ruined my desire for the rest of my Flora de Philipinas cigars. Can't stand to think about smoking one at all.

Hmmm Rubber band. I feel a bit better now. If it wasn't that than maybe something else. My throat and nasal passage is pretty raw and I am a bit afraid to light up another one, sad they are a good brand. I will do an autopsy to see if this is an isolated incident.

Out of curiosity, for those that have smoked a foreign object in a cigar, what was the worst reaction you experienced?

Hmm... A smokey/hickory smell you say..
I had the same problem once. Turns out I was smoking a Jimmy Dean Breakfast Sausage. Great with scrambled eggs too.

Does "foreign substance in a cigar" include blunts...particularly flavored blunts?

Seriously, I did smoke one that turned out to have what appeared to be a piece of blue yarn or string in it. Had about the same reaction you did; raw throat and nasal passages, lots of acrid smoke that smelled terrible and burned my eyes. Guess someone in quality control let that one get past them. Has only happened that once and, knock on wood, won't happen again. Very disappointing experience.

Seriously, I think the string from your parka was dangling in the ash. Ya' hoser. :)

Not Jimmy Dean Breakfast Sausage. String from my parka could have dangled a little, no no, I remember leaving the parka in the Igloo.

Performed that autopsy. Nothing in the gar unless it was mostly burnt away. The ash that was still in tacked had those curled up balls I described. I rolled them in my fingers; they broke up like cookie crumbs.

awrings - how long did you suffer from the sore throat? Mines gotten a little worse and the inner ear is a bit irritated. I might pop by the doc later. Of course I'll have to hook up the dog sled.

limoric --- I seriously doubt it ... as it is a powerful herbicide, and any drift whatsoever would kill the toabacco plants ...

It was sprayed on Pot in the 70's to kill/control it. I doubt seriously it's still even in use, but it could be. Perhaps the roller was male, and out of spirit gum?

never heard of anything that curled into little balls but I did smoke a piece of string once and it made my throat raw for a few days. I hope that was all it was, good luck and let us know what you find

Limoric,
Sounds a lot like hair. I remember someone spilled the blunt filler in the carpet late one night. We decided to smoke it and the next morning there were all these little balls in the ash. Can't rule out carpet fibers either, but a man's got to do what a man's got to do!
Soon you will get past this. If not, there is always therapy$$

OK I'm still alive. I did got to the doc the night of this original post. He took a swab and said he'd get back to me if it were strepped throat. Next day sore throat went away and nose started running. Just a cold. But I wonder if that cigar induced the cold in any way. I'm still afraid to light another one up.

Yo limoric: I remember a poem that might be the answer you are looking for, it goes like this..." He who rolls cigars in halls - rolls their **** in little balls - he who buys those cigars to wit - smokes those little balls of **** ". Hope this helps. Jonr
