Hi,

Sorry if this topic is overplayed. I did some searches and reviewed the required reading and I am still unsure.
A co-worker just came back from the Dominican Republic. He gave me a couple of Montecristos - Churchill sized. They are each in a coffin style box. The box is wrapped in cello with an open top to display the cigar. There is a cuban green seal around the bottom of the box that looks authentic. He swears they are the real deal and from a reputable source. (If was a White Owl this guy wouldn't know)

I did some searches and couldn't find any thing that looked like this. The Montecristo Serie VII comes in a coffin but that box has the Montecristo logo and a signature on it This box is just plain.

Are there any Montes singles coming out of cuba in boxes like this or am I going to be smoking a dog rocket on my vacation?

Thanks for the info

From what I found searching, it looks like the monte A comes in a coffin with the seal being on the bottom to the left. Looks laquered also.

Thanks for the feedback.
Looks like the cigar is 7" with a 49 or 50 ring gauge.
Does this help?

I was with Meanie before but - based upon that measurement I know that "It is not the "A". The A is 9 1/4 by 47. Monster of a gar.

My guess - If it is then it would be an Especial 7 ½ 38 Languito No 1 - Which does not come in a coffin. But that does not mean that the gar is fake. Just means that I am not aware of it.

Sound like a lawyer?

Unfortuantely, no one has taken into consideration that the DR is rampant with counterfeit Cuban cigars ... heck 90% of the 'domestics' are fake too ...

... I would be very wary ... because that is not one of the standard sizes.

Okay,

So it looks like this cigar is a churchill. The only Monte Churchills I can locate are DRs.(Which I'm sure are fine cigars) Being as someone took the trouble to really make this look like a cuban, I'll be happy if it's even a Monte.

If I can scan the box, I post a pic in the appropriate forum.

Later,

Steve

... most likely, it probably isn't even a Montecristo from the DR, since they used a 'Cuban Monte-style' band ... or even made from Cuban tobacco. But, if by some faint chance that the leaves came for Cuba (a long shot), it could be what is called a 'farm' cigar.

Farm cigars are made with low-grade tobacco from the 'farm down the street' (not what the band says), or just the inferior leaves that didn't make it into regular production.

Just accept the fact that your are smoking a DR cigar from one of the 'lesser unknown farms' ... and you shouldn't be disappointed ... ;^)

You bought them for less than the real ones sell for in Cuba.
