Let's talk Kentuckian for a moment. What are your favorite bourbons to accompany your favorite cigars. In my salad days, I was a Turkey 101 enthusiast, probably too much so. I like their Rare Breed and single barrels also.

Maker's Mark is a value that's tough to beat.

My latest is a single barrel by Evan Williams 86.6 proof.

Basically, I never met a bourbon I didn't like, but I like to reserve the good stuff for my cigar smoking. I plan to sample many more so if you could steer me in the right directions it would be much appreciated.

Yeah Robby, my wife doesn't dig the Turkey where her husband is concerned. When she first met me, I was a heavy turkey drinker/partier and she's seen enough for a lifetime. A few good ones with my cigars doesn't hurt though as I've learned when to quit.

I always like Crown Royal and Woodsford Reserve but I never had either with a cigar. I tried Makers Mark once and it overpowered the cigar. I normally just have a giner ale with my smoke.

Sorry to be so strict, but let's keep it limited to bourbon please. There is a more broad-range whiskey post running at the moment.

Thanks,
Sketcha

Crown Royal slides down your throat as smooth as a wet clam covered in Vaseline...but tastes a whole lot better!

I live about 4 miles from the Beam bottling plant at Clermont, Kentucky. This time of year, when its 90 degrees in the shade and not a breath of wind, you can stand outside the warehouses and and smell the whiskey as it evaporates. That is, you can stand there till you pass out from the fumes...

Crown Royal is not a Bourbon it's a Blended Canadian Whisky and I don't believe Kesslers to be a Bourbon either.

To be bourbon the mash recipe must be at least 51% corn.

Slim,

I'm a pretty big fan of Kessler's myself. "Smooth as Silk" and a great value. I find it on sale at Rite Aid often for $12.99/Magnum (1.75 liter). I don't think it qualifies as bourbon though. I believe it is a blended whiskey.

Crown is good stuff, but again, is not bourbon. It's blended whiskey.

Bourbon has specific requirements and it must say "Bourbon" on the label. It can be made anywhere in the United States but only Kentucky can put their state name on the label.

Here's a link for anyone interested.

Old Yellowstone back in my serious drinking days. Now I go with dark beer or red wine.

Sorry...No help here. I've never cared for bourbon with my cigars. However, I've always wondered why you can generally buy straight bourbon but most whiskeys are always blended???

Knob Creek or Makers Mark both complement the types of cigars that I smoke frequently. These include (but are not limited to): Padron maduros, IT super fuerte, Buc full sail maduros, 5 Vegas, CAO criollos.

Check out this site if your ever looking for something hard to find or unusual. The place is about 25 minutes from me so I go there often. They have a huge wine cellar and single malt scotch selection, not to mention a huge walkin cooler for import and micro-brewed beer.

They do have a nice selection of cigars as well and reasonably priced (for So Cal) but this is their wine and spirit site. The cigar web-site has been currently under construction for the last couple years so don't ask...LOL

sketcha - Never met a bourbon I didn't like. I've tried the Evan Williams SB 86.6, and I really enjoyed it. If you like that, pick up a bottle of Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select Kentucky Straight Bourbon (90.4 proof). Full-bodied and smooth, with just the right amount of 'bite'. I'm on my second bottle and it holds it's own any bourbon I've tried. Good stuff and it's about $30 a bottle. It's worth a try.

Makers Mark is good, Crown Reserve is great, but you're asking about burbons. It's not from Burbon Co. Kentucky (so they called it Sour Mash instead of Burbon), from south of the Mason-Dixon line is a brand of mash called Rebel Yell. IMHO the "mother's milk" of all sippin' whiskies. Goes great with any medium to full bodied smoke (a mild smoke will not just compete, but get lost in the mash flavor).

KY Bourbons? ... Wild Turkey or Makers Mark are, IMO, the best although in my life, I've poured in enough Beam to sink a battleship and find Mr Jack's fine product from next-door TN hard to ignore ...

Beam will do for most days, If your in the mood for something with a little more, Knob Creek, Bookers, Woodford reserve to name a few.

Well now that I think about it, most from KY are worth drinking.

I'm a little partial being a KY boy and all !!

Great post sketcha. As for me, I break out the Booker's when I'm feeling rich, but otherwise it's usually knob creek or Jack Daniels, though I recognize he's not from KY. I like Maker's Mark on occasion, but I agree with some earlier posts that it sometimes overpowers the more mild to medium cigars. I'd love to try some of that Rebel Yell though...
