In addition to my aging question, I would like to know some more info on the subject of humidity. I understand the levels of the humidor and the use of distilled water, etc...However, I am not sure as to what the case would be say if your cigars in fact became dried out. 1]. Is it possible to rehydrate them? It hasn't happened to me, but I was curious. 2]. Also, how often should you check the reading (assuming that you don't smoke more than once every week or two), and add more water?

It's been my understanding that it takes twice as long in the Dor to rehumidify as it took to dry out. If the cigars have totally dried out and lost thier oils, they cannot recoup, the oils have been lost.

Wow!!! Two questions that pertain to cigars! Is this board getting back to suome sembalance of normalcy?
You can re-hydrate your cigars by getting the humidor back to a regular humidity level. Then put the cigars back into the humidor, as far away from the humidifying device as you can, slowly moving them closer to the humidifying device over 2-4 weeks.
As far as how often to check the humidistat it depends on where you live, how good your humidor is, etc....

I Don't know about anybody else. but I'm having to check my humidors about every two days. The air here in missouri is so dry (34% humidity) its sucking the moisture out of everything. But thats ok. It gives me a reason to baby sit my cigars.

Well as for me, living in houston,tx, low humidity is not a problem, the problem is we have way too much humidity, but never the less i still check my dor about once a week and re-fill the humidifier about once every two weeks.... as for the re-humidifying thing, i have not had that problem yet so i really can't help....

hi all, good advice boys but i don't think you want to place your dried out sticks back in your humidor. They dry ones will suck the moisture out of your other sticks at a faster rate. The rate of depletion also depends on the number of cigars in your humidor. A 25 capacity humidor topped off will lose moisture quicker than a 25 stick humidor half full. I have a 40 stick capacity humidor and I keep 25 or so sticks in there.
I charge the puck every two weeks or so. A tip an old friend gaive me a while back to recover a dried out stick was to grab a big zip lock bag and a paper towel.
soak the paper towel in distilled water, wring it out and place it in the bag. place you tired old dried out sticks in the bag, don't let them touch the paper towel, leave them in there for a week or two checking here and there. then place them among the living sticks in your humidor. I have some partagas 150 AA I revived that way and they are perfect now. During shipping in the summer months they took a bit of a beating, not bad but not perfect. it works.

Oils don't evaporate (unless they are volatile oils) ... they can be hyrdated, if done slowly. Of course, once they dry out they are prone to cracking ... but, if you are careful with them, it can be accomplished. They will never be as good as they once were, though ...

ehjr, I.m in Houston also. When my AC went out with 110 degree temps I had a small problem so I took my humidor to work. Just had to hide it to keep the crowd from getting curious.
