Here's a question...

When I first got into cigars, I read "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cigars" by Tad Gage, which was written during the boom of the mid 90's. It always refered to the Cuban government's cigar monopoly as Cubtabaco.

But now, whenever I've heard about cigars in articles, or when I saw the picture post of the Cohiba 3-pack Rasta put on the forum, it says Habanos S.A. and has the little stylized leaf logo like Cubatabaco used/uses.

What's the deal? Did Cubatabaco change it's name? Or does it still exist and Habanos S.A. is the foreign arm of Cuban cigar sales? Anyone know?

Cubatabaco (Empresa Cubana del Tabaco, La Habana, Cuba) and Habanos, S.A. (La Habana, Cuba) are the two state run tobacco companies.

Habanos S.A. is the name of current Cuban company which exports Havanas and will appear on all boxes exported since October 1994.

Cubatobaco's logo would appear in place of this hallmark on boxes between 1985 through September 1994.

So did Habanos SA supercede Cubatabaco, Slim? Or is Habanos simply the foreign arm of Cuban cigar distribution?

Habanos S.A. is a venture company ... property to similar parts of Cubatabaco ... company property of the Cuban State ... and Altadis, a Spanish company that resulted from the fusion of Tabacalera and SEITA.

The social object of the society is the
commercialization of all the Cuban tobacco products, mainly cigars, and other related products, in Cuba and worldwide.

Habanos S.A. is the world leading company in the commercialization of premium cigars. It is present in the five continents and implanted in more than 100 countries. More than 90% of its global billing comes from its international activity.

Habanos S.A. is now the exclusive marketing and distribution company for Cuban cigars ... and Cubatabacco was its predecessor.

I still don't understand, Robby ... why that bothers you (or is even that important) ... and why you 'get off' so much on pointing out to everyone that I'm not as smart as they think. This is not the first time you have done this ... and jealousy doesn't look very good on you.

Anyone who has been here for any length of time, knows that I love to 'Cut 'n Paste' ...

Sure ... I could have just posted the 'links', to almost everything that many ask here, but isn't that kind of impersonal? And, it sure doen't make for very interesting reading on a forum ... does it?

I never professed to anyone, that I have/had all that information memorized in my head (or that I was some sort of genius) ... BUT ... I do, and will, take the time to look up and find the info that many here don't seem to have the time, don't know where to look, or are just too lazy to do it themselves ... or that it's just easier to have someone else do it for them.

Isn't thats why (in the days past) we had/have libraries ... and now with our wonderful new technologies, we've got access to a wealth of information on the internet?

Your feeble attempts of trying to bring to everyones attention my sources of information, as I try to help the folks here get answers to the questions they seek ... is starting to get old and very pathetic ...

In a sense, Robby ... you just told the questioners here how inept they are, in your continuing efforts to try to undermine my efforts to help them ... and your motives are to 'try' to make me look bad, or at least stupid. Your level of maturity really comes out in true form, when these people thank me for the answers I find for them ...

... give it up. You can't win ... ;^)

Place me firmly in the lazy category. I will rarely follow links if provided either (especially political) and much prefer someone to do my research for me, even if it is c&p. That way I can quick scan and get what I want out of the post and then move along to the next.

Didn't completely finish my thought.

As someone who regularly cites the work of others and whose success depends on the citations of my own, I do recognize the importance of acknowledging your sources. So...maybe in the future saying "cigar nexus says..." Then I could also look up more if so motivated.

ps I appreciated the info here.

Thanks wer ...

... and for those interested in where I got my facts ... they came from several different sources in my research of the questions asked.

One of those being a very large and reputable site that sell Cuban cigars in the UK (hint: supplied by Hunters & Frankau, importers with 200 years experience), and the other being a site that also sells Cuban cigars out of Switzerland (so I can't post the links here). One other, was an article I found that I 'borrowed' a few words from, that I can't seem to locate right now ...

What I wrote was a compliation of several sources ... Cigarnexus just being one of three that I found in my search.
