So if this has been asked before, oh wel....
What do you guys do when you're about to light up that gar? Do you reach for a punch, cutter or snipper? Do you use one over the other depending on the cigar's shape?and why? and lastly is there a particular brand you use or will a generic one do?
Let's hear them!!!

Ok, I'll answer. I cut. Mostly because I'm cheap and my first humidor came with a free double cutter. It's stayed sharp and works well. I've used a few punches on various gars and never really liked it. It didn't let out enough smoke for me even with an open draw - I guess my palate isn't refined enough to detect the subtle nuances with just a little smoke (which you will all see when I post my blind reviews....). Never tried the scissors or a V cut - never seen anyone with either and don't care to spend the money on one when my cutter works just fine for me. I usually cut about 1/8 of an inch below the bottom of the cap or leave about 3/8 inch diameter hole on torpedos.

How's that for detail?

It depends on the length of the cap for me. If its to small of a cap I use the punch. If it looks long enough I use the cutters. I've messed up enough cigars, so sometimes the punch is the safe bet.

I prefer an exacto knife. A quick light cut around the circumference of the cap and light! The double cutter I use seems to chrush rather than cut and is hard to sharpen.

I use a SAK (Swiss Army Knife) cutter that works great! I've got a punch cutter that has three different sizes on it. The biggest punch is the only one I use out of the three. It puts a little more than a half inch hole in the cap. Good draw, but nothing beats a clean cut :)

Usually cut with my Xikar.
Sometimes use V cut on box pressed gars
Sometimes punch, but rarely
Tried scissors a few times. Gotta get used to them... need practice.

I cut 99% of the time, I have a small punch for my key ring that I use if I am away from home or don't have a cutter available. My only problem with cutting is that I am still working on getting the cut straight. I think it might be because one of my legs is longer than the other. lol!

Used to live and die by the straight cut, but now, my tastes have changed.

If I use a straight cut, I always have a double-bladed guillotine. Anymore, I hate the single-bladed, because it always seems to crush the cigar against the side of the cutting hole that the blade isn't on, and usually results in the cap starting to unravel (that was hard to describe, but does anyone else get this problem from single-bladed cutters?)

I got a two-pack of punch cutters off CBid that clip to your keychain, and anymore, I use the punch. For me, it doesn't seem to make a big difference as far as how much smoke I get out of it, and I like it because there's less risk of the cap (and the wrapper) from unraveling and the rounded cap fits nicely between your lips.

V-cuts...occassionally. It's not that I love or that I hate it, it's just that I never have my v-cutter on me and it doesn't make much difference as to how the draw, volume of smoke, structural integrity of the cigar is anyhow.
