The following is an e-mail that I'd like to share...

I HOPE CIGARBID KEEPS IT ON!

Subject: Important Message Regarding Senator Ashcroft

TO: GOP Activist

Dear Fellow Republican:

Most Americans hoped the end of the Clinton presidency would also be
the end of the Clinton attack machine. But instead of embracing
President-Elect Bush's call for a new bipartisanship, the extreme left is
embracing the politics of personal destruction in attacking the nomination
of Senator John Ashcroft to the position of Attorney General of the United
States.

Senator Ashcroft has been praised by his fellow Senators across the
ideological spectrum as a man of the highest integrity. Yet, extreme
left-wing groups smear Ashcroft as a "racist" because his concerns about
victims' rights and upholding the death penalty led him to oppose one
African-American judge - even though Senator Ashcroft voted to confirm 26
out of 28 African-American judicial nominees put forward by the Clinton
Administration.

Senator Ashcroft needs your help. Please call, fax and e-mail the
Democratic Senators listed at the end of this letter who will be voting on
the Ashcroft nomination. Tell them that the politics of personal
destruction must stop, and urge them to support the nomination of John
Ashcroft.

Take a moment to read the truth about Senator Ashcroft by reading
the facts below and visiting our special website at
http://www.rnc.org/ashcroft.htm. Forward this e-mail to your friends and
family and encourage them to do the same. Only if enough concerned
Americans make their voices heard will we ever get beyond the partisanship
and political smear campaigns that have been all too common these last eight
years. It's time to restore dignity to our political process. Thank you
for your help.

Sincerely,

Chairman Jim Nicholson

P.S. - Please don't forget to contact these Senators, and to forward this
e-mail to as many people as you can!

on the Judiciary Committee with Ashcroft, called him 'a gentleman' who was
'invariably polite and flexible' in his handling of legislative matters."

I believe, although I'm sure he is a decent man, his record speaks to his unacceptance of the basic rights and diginties of people

He distorted and misrepresented the record of a highly qualified African American Missouri Supreme Court Judge, Ronnie White, and misled his colleagues in the Senate in order to sabotage White's nomination to a federal district court.
He has led attempts to amend the Constitution and pass legislation that would virtually eliminate a woman's reproductive rights by banning abortions, even for rape and incest victims.
The abortion ban he proposes is so extreme that it could be used to outlaw widely accepted and commonly used birth control methods including the Pill and IUDs.
He engaged in extremist rhetoric to enforce an anti-abortion litmus test against a highly qualified African American physician, Dr. David Satcher, who, despite Ashcroft's attacks, won confirmation by a two-thirds majority as Surgeon General in 1998. During the Senate debate on Dr. Satcher's nomination, Ashcroft accused him of being "someone who is indifferent to infanticide."
Similarly, abortion was the litmus test Ashcroft applied in helping to block Dr. Henry Foster's confirmation as Surgeon General in 1995.
He employed another litmus test issue, affirmative action, to help block a full Senate vote on the nomination of Asian American Bill Lann Lee as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, a position under the direct supervision of the Attorney General.
Ashcroft has opposed legislation designed to end workplace discrimination (the Employment Non-Discrimination Act) and to protect vulnerable groups of Americans against hate crimes (the Hate Crimes Prevention Act).
He has given public praise to the far right magazine Southern Partisan, a neo-Confederate fringe publication that promotes the view, among others, that slavery was beneficial to the enslaved Africans.
He cast the sole vote in 1999 against a continuing resolution to keep the federal government running and has voted with big tobacco, with gun manufacturers, and against a national drunk driving standard.
He consistently receives top ratings and endorsements from far right groups such as the National Rifle Association and the Christian Coalition, a distinction conferred only on their most dependable allies.
Ashcroft takes a cavalier attitude toward the Constitution, as evidenced by his frequent efforts to amend it. In just six years in the Senate he introduced or sponsored seven attempted amendments. One of the most radical of these was one he proposed in 1996 that would have changed the Framers' original framework in order to make it much easier to amend the Constitution, thus opening the way for disastrous political and ideological mischief.
The National Journal wrote that, "Ashcroft's record in 1997 and 1998 put him in a tie as the most-conservative Senator, according to the National Journal's rankings." According to that analysis, Senator Ashcroft was even farther to the right than Jesse Helms.

Rick, looks like you've done your homework, albeit in the wrong places. "virtually eliminate a womans reproductive right"???? By banning abortions?! Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that allow her to still reproduce? I think it would actually eliminate her right to kill the unborn. Call it semantics but it's tough for me to comprehend why a beating heart is not considered a life worth saving...

Man...what a pain it is to see this political rhetoric on this board. What gets me is this...both left and right side of the political spectrum are involved in personal destruction tactics. If anyone doesnt think this is true...PULL YOUR HEAD OUT!! Bottom line there is a lot of conservatives from either party who dont stray that far away from each other on many issues.
In addition, there are scandals and problems in BOTH parties, and if you really follow politics and can examine evidence empirically, one would not be posting rhetorical political crap on this board.
