"The epitaph of the Reagan presidency will be: 'When Ronald Reagan became President, the United States was the largest creditor nation. When he left the presidency, we were the world's largest debtor nation.'"

If you want an omlette, you have to break some eggs.

America broke the back of communism and shattered the nuclear fallout on American soil myth with that "debt". No more ducking under desks or civil defense crews practicing on the weekends for incoming missles.

Last time I checked they weren't offering a burial plan with a hearse towing a U-Haul trailer for one's stuff. You can't take anything with you when you're gone. Money was here before you were and that same money will be here after we're gone!

Personally, I think that going into debt to clear the "Evil Empire" hurdle was worth every dime.

That may be true, but Ronald Reagan will go down in history as one of the top 8 Presidents. At least according to a historian who was also my history professor at Penn State. He has happened to be a historian who has ranked the Presidents dating back to JFK.

Dating back to JFK would have been 9 Presidents ago, how can he not be in the top 8 out of 9?

SP,
Do I really need to spell this out for you? My professor has been a historian dating back to JFK (he's not that old, at least when I had him 13 years ago). Ronald Reagan will be ranked in the top 8 of Presidents. I do not see how you can mix up two different things. The rankings are for all Presidents dating back to Washington. If we went by your assumtpion then how would we rank Presidents then? There is not one that has been alive dating back to Washington now is there? If so, please educate me.

Rick,
Nice statement. Just because you disagree with someone does that mean you have to call them names? Real mature! I just love how mature the board has become. No wonder so many tried and true brothers of the leaf have left this board.

By the way Rick,

The idiot professor was you called him was well respected as both a professor and historian across the United States and in both political parties.

Were it not for Ronald Reagan, I would not have been able to retire at age 55. The Reagan tax plan, allowing for rapid line depreciation of real estate, including corporate limited partnerships, gave me almost a decade free of federal income tax. I admit that there were times when I felt a little guilty paying less federal taxes that my public schoolteacher brother, who earned significantly less than me, but the investment opportunity was open to anyone with sufficient investment dollars.

Good moves Steve, you take what you can get, legally. I hope I can retire at 55. I'm on pace, but you never know for sure. I have 11 more yrs to do it.

Rick, he did write "He has happened to be a historian who has ranked the Presidents dating back to JFK." To me, in english, that means he has ranked the Presidents dating back to JFK, which would be 9 Presidents ago.........maybe I didn't need to apologize...1 plus 1 does equal 2......Your right too!!!
