My wife works with a woman who drove with her husband to Chicago. They stayed the night and one of the things they packed was some wine and cheese. From Chicago she drove home and he flew to (if I remember correctly) St. Lois. On his return flight from St. Lois to Chicago he was stopped at security for having a knife in luggage. Evidently his wife put the cheese cutting knife in his luggage and forgot it.

He got handcuffed, detained, and a $3,000 fine! The scary part is that the knife wasn't detected during his flight from Chicago to St. Lois only on the return trip.

About six months ago, my girlfriend and I flew from Tucson to Portland. On our return trip, when we through security, they found a pocketknife in her bag and a cigar lighter in mine. Of course they confiscated both of them.

But again, the scary thing is security didn’t see them when we left Tucson. She forgot she had the knife in her laptop bag, and I didn’t know lighters weren’t allowed. When I asked security who should I talk to for the lack of security in Tucson, they shrugged it off and said it happens sometimes, “we’re never perfect.”

The pocketknife was about 4 inches, when folded.
