Good article, Rick. Evidently, most didn't read this story of the Russian emigree who was educated at Leningrad, the same Russian university that graduated Putin and Ayn Rand. An excerpt from her experience at SAN FRANCISCO STATE COLLEGE in Californiad, in an ENGLISH (not philosophy or poli-sci) course:

[Last summer, one of my professors started every class with Orwellian "Five-Minute Hate" condemnations of President Bush. The instructor did not understand how ridiculous he looked: a 50-year-old guy in sandals and a worn-out jacket with hanging threads, who didn't make it to an Ivy League university, giving hysterical speeches calling President Bush "a moron" and "a good for nothing idiot."]

Some of our favorite posters may not realize they are qualified to teach English at SF State.

Clearly we must purge our education system of all who do not cheerlead the president.

For an indoctrinated student, the author sure seems to have not been indoctrinated.

LOL!

That website is great fun...a real journey through reactionary paranoia! LOL! Thanks for the reference. Got a real kick out of it. Nothing like attacking a whole education system based on an unsubstantiated anecdote (my money is that Horowitz wrote it himself). For those who care, that is an informal fallacy.

Why does it always have to be one extreme or the other with you? What's wrong with just teaching the subject they're supposed to be teaching and leaving the soapbox at home?

This 'article' is extreme. And most likely a lie.

Oh, I get it. Anything that disagrees with jdrabinski’s ideals is a lie. A quick google search on “professors, soapbox, university” found the following:

“We also have professors that have taken to political activism, such as a political science professor who spoke at many rallies opposing war in Iraq.”

"My human rights teacher bashed on America a lot," she said, adding that no one in the class ever objected.

“College students increasingly find themselves caught up in the middle of a cultural battlefield as more professors deviate from traditional teaching standards and wade into the pool of indoctrination”

“Following this comment, we had a class discussion on how to lead a Marxist revolution, and whether or not it was a viable option in the United States. This was in an Education class, by the way.”

“A college speech instructor was placed on leave for giving extra credit to students who wrote letters to President George W. Bush opposing a war with Iraq but declining any bonus to students who support war”

Now keep in mind that I didn’t use the words, “left, liberal or democrat” in my search, but what I found was the majority of our professors who insert political agendas into their curriculum are inserting a leftist agenda. Are you going to tell me these are all extremes and lies?

Interesting points at work here...

Professors are leftists.

Professors are the smartest, most educated people in this country. (That's what a Ph.D. signifies)

The smartest and most educated people in this country are leftists.

Seems clear: the smarter you are, the less likely you are to be a republican.

Yep. Sounds about right to me!

Although I don’t want to diminish the value of a college education, I wouldn’t go so far as to say that education directly translates to smart. I work in a large software company and some of our college grads cannot think outside the box. They have perfect grammar when sending e-mails, however they think only the way they were taught to think. I know everyone would agree, there’s a difference between intelligence and wisdom. As for me, I’ll choose wisdom every time.

Also, this thread was about professors using class time to promote their agenda. I’m against that, no matter what side they’re on. However, you refuse to see that… as it’s all lies and extremism.

How sad.
John has taken to patting himself on the back.

He used to be a professor, now he claims they are the smartest people of all.

Sad.

But the reality is this:

Professors are well educated.
A phd recognizes education, not intelligence.

But most all, this old saying will always hold true:
"Those that can't do, teach"

I do not believe the professor is a professor, not that it really matters. I have never seen a thoughtful, reasoned post from him. One would think a professor could make one from time to time, without the invectives, epithets and derision.

For the record, not that it really matters, I once won an Academy Award for best supporting actor.

"Professors are the smartest, most educated people in this country. (That's what a Ph.D. signifies)"

I do believe the PhD signifies education but has little to do with how "smart" someone is. Level of education attained is more appropriately related to someone having the means and opportunity to attend a university as well as a desire.

I've worked with many educated people that can recite from reference books but had no idea how to draw their own conclusions from facts. Their idea of research was reading publications and gathering data collected by others. That doesn't make them smart, just educated and literate.

Smart people build upon their educational foundation and expand their knowledge by injecting their own thought processes to create new information or ideas. They don't just regurgitate what they read in a book or heard in a lecture hall.

Don't get me started.
