mr. wanyburger ok: buy a half dozen covered travel soap holder's and drill lots of holes in the top. about $1.50 each. buy a block of "WET" oaisis for about $2.00 at a craft store. cut the oasis with a fine saw or sharp knife to fit the soap holder making sure it is a loose fit. you will want the oasis to
have a lot of surface exposed on all four side. drop in the oasis and fill the soap holder with the
standard mixture of proplene glycol to distilled water, 50/50. it is not necessary to be all that
accurate, because you will be adding water as it evaporates. you can buy undiluted pg for less
than $10. a pint. at a pharmacy. let the mixture soak in the oaises for a day or two and pour out the excess. wipe the outside surfaces dry, you don't want to damage the wood. put it in the humidor where it won't have cigars on top of the holder. pg absorbs moisture in the air if the humidty is over 70 to 73. if the air surrounding the pg is under 70 humidity, water will vaporize from the oasis until the humidty is 70 to 73. temperature is irellevant. tobacco should be kept at 70 to 73 because that allows the leaves to be pliable. under 68 the leaves become brittle, over 75 the the cells in the leaves begin to swell. there are may sites that will discuss the scientific reasons, but this is a satisfactory explaination for the layman. all credos and similar device use "WET" oaisis, but just looking at their small size explains why humidors need so much attention, not enough water is available to vaporize and fill the humidor. hygrometer calibration is another subject. almost all hygrometers are off by 7 to 10%.
this is not my original, but a bit of this and a bit of that from here and there. i hope it is useful.
