OK Guys...your comments please
As someone who makes frequent business trips to spain (and a brother that does the same), the majority of my smokes, 2 - 3 a day on average, are cuban.
I would therfore like to think that I have an idea of the quality of cigars that are currently coming out of Cuba. The top end aside, are Cubans really that much better than good cigars from Central Amarica?...even the cohiba singlo range at the moment are not, in my oppinion as good as some of you guys may think. As I said there are certain Cuban smokes that do take some matching, but to be honest there is also alot of stuff coming out that if you were not told came from Cuba, would not impress you...Is it just a case that because you can't have it...you want it, and over-rate it?
Believe it or not, again in my oppinion, there are some very good Canary Island cigars(espesially Condal), some of these are just as good as everyday Cubans coming out of the Romeo and Partagas factory. As I said it,s all about oppinions...and thats mine.

AJ, you pretty much answered your own question/ comment. I too agree that the best cigars do not come from Cuba. In fact you will read/hear that most of the members of this site have had Cubans at one point or another and find that other countries (DR, CR, Hon, Nic, Can Is.) indeed produce better cigars. As you have stated, this is not to knock the fantastic Cuban cigars on the market, just to point out that they are not the best cigars. And for the money they are not even close.

you are both correct. it may be that castro has let the soil deteriorate or that the cigar rollers are not well trained. a montecrist "a" is about $32. compare that to a hemmingway or a partagas or many other good brands, and it isn't worth the money. the only real value is to give one to a business associate, a customer, a client and impress the hell out of him.

I have to disagree a bit. In Paris a Montecristo # 2 goes for about $10. I bought an El Rey Del Mundo Robusto for about $7. These Cubans are well worth the money when compared to other cigars in the same price range. Perhaps they are not unilaterally the best cigars on the market, but what cigar is? They are a unique experience. I will agree that the price is harder to justify if you are paying to have them shipped to the U.S. from people that know you will pay U.S. prices for them.

unclebill, I agree on the Montecristo #2, and several other Cubans, but I also must say that for the price there are other cigars available that are as good or better than most Cubans! Rickamaven, I agree with what you said about the customer/client or business associate gift of a Cuban or two is still the ultimate "wow" and gives you a big bang for the buck!

RICK, thanks for the ISOMs, finally got to smoke two of the RyJ No. 5's and one of the Monte No. 4's on Saturday, my dad's b-day. Thanks for the trade and smokes :) Which brings me to my point on this subject; you're better off going for the smaller, less sought after sizes of ISOMs, they're aged more, better constructed because of the lack of overwhelming demand on them and priced reasonably. My 2 cents...

Also, the "less sought after" smaller (petite corona for example) sizes of "Cubens" are not counterfeited as often as the Monte #2s, Cohiba Esplendidos, etc.

Just a comment guys, I come from a Cuban friendly country and frankly I think CUban cigars nowadays are seriously over rated.. they are harsh from lack of aging.. and quite badly made. Maybe back in the day they were good, but nowadays....

I have had Dominicans which were so much better than Cubans, which is sad. I believe the wonders of Cuban cigars are all hype now.
