I know we come from many areas, so I am looking for a BOTL that can share some knowledge on heat pumps.

Thanks

I knew that. That is why I asked. There is nothing but great guys here.

I have been without heat since last week. Guy said whole system was blown since a relay burnt out and 220 volts went through entire system. Says the inside and outside unit is shot. Replaced some parts (circuit board and such) got us emergency heat. Told me we could run on that until spring, when we could save enough to replace the whole system.

Couple of questions.

1. How long can you use emergency heat?
2. Won't emergency heat give a huge electric bill?
3. Could 220 volts running through the whole system ruin everything?

I think that is all for now.

emercency heat just means your running the electric heating elements on the inside unit (which is a part of the system not actually for emergency use only).this in not very effecent but it gets the job done. your electric bill will be higher.i can not say what actually happened with out seeing it.some a/c techs are not very good with heat pumps, if you dont feel comfortable with what he told you it might be worth a second opinion.

Thanks,

what about question #3. Does that sound possible? He is checking the circuit board in the outside unit tomorrow, thinks replacing that will work.

i have never seen anything like that before, but i guess anything is possible, if your system is more than 15 years old you might need a new one,if not i bet it can be fixed.

Actually it is only 5 years old. 5 Year warranty ran out last month on the 15th. don't that beat all.

He said all of the electronics on the inside unit was made by a company that went out of business. So he replaced the circuit board and all relays inside. Was at my home yesterday and said that it also fried the circuit board out there and a contact switch. Told me it 90% sure this should fix it.
