The description of the new Leon Jimines Maduro states that they Naturally Ferment the Maduro leaves, and they further go on to state that others may falsely create a maduro by boiling or some other kind of voodoo magic. Has anybody ever heard of bogus maduros, and do you know which brands do it or how the taste differs?

I have had a Santa Rosa Cetro Maduro which left quite a bit of the maduro part on my lips and fingers. Gave me the impression it had been soaked in something to make it the nice dark color it started as. Did not taste bad, actually I enjoyed the cigar, but then I am not too picky. I would be willing to bet this was not a natural dark maduro wrapper.

A maduro wrapper is produced by fermentation during the bundle stage. The tobbacco is piled in bundles and carefully monitored to maintain approx 160 degrees. It is frequently turned to maintain proper temperature. Obviously this is more costly and time consuming. Several Cheap maduro manufaturers short stop this process by boiling or steaming the leaves to speed up the fermentation. This process usually leads to a coating of one type or another left on the wrapper. Cheap maduros made in this fashion will leave sticky dark rings on your lips and fingers. If you ever get the chance to look at the HOYO de MONT add you will see the leaves in their aging(fermentation) bundles. Padron also has an add showing this. If you have sticky dark rings on your fingers and mouth but do not smoke cheap maduros, I suggest you consider a lifestyle change.

Hey, jh -- this also happened to me with a Santa Rosa! After the smoke, I looked like a kid that had been trying to chew some Red Man. Unfortunately, it was one of my first maduros and it put a bad taste in my mouth (literally). It wasn't until months later I gave another maduro a try, a good one -- I believe it was a JR Ultimate dbl-maduro -- and now I'm a big maduro fan.

Actually the Santa Rosa Robusto Maduro is one of my favorite Maduros! It packs a lot of punch and is a beautiful cigar!
