I really liked the idea put forth in one of Tom Clancys books. Write a law that says our import regulations shall mirror the regulations of the country we're dealing with. I think the Indian government would be served right if they get too greedy, and all the companies that have outsourced there come home!

There was a good segment on 60 Minutes recently on this subject, although not on the federal government level. It's big business over there. I am pretty sure that on at least 2 or 3 occassions my calls have gone to India. Contrary to their claim that Indian call center employees can sound American or English, I had a very difficult time understanding an HP rep I spoke with. It's very sad that American companies are doing this stuff.

Protectionist? You betcha! I'm tired of seeing my tax money turned into welfare for the world. Like Jefferson said: "Friendly commerce with all, binding ties with none." On the other hand, Americans want cheap goods. We're never going to get that if they keep raising the minimum wage just so morons don't have to learn anything.

Here is my experience from working in the IT field and having extensive experience with offshoring activities.

Offshoring in IT is doomed to long term failure. Here's why. If you are a talented foreign employee and your family has the extra funds to buy you a ticket, you will come to America to work. You will make your $$$ and go home where the cost of living is lower and live like a king. That means that a majority of talented foreign employees have already left their country.

What is left over are the semi-talented employees. The foreign country will use these employees on projects within their borders because they can charge a higher bill rate.

What is left over after that are the bottom of the barrel scrubs. No real skills (technical and language) and no marketability. This is what the foreign country is offering up to the U.S. at a discounted rate. These are the people answering your tech support calls and working on your programming projects. Quality will suffer because of this and the work will ultimately return to the U.S. This sounds harsh, but this is the reality. I'm seeing this on a regular basis. I think it was either Dell or Gateway that recently removed all tech support phone centers from India because U.S. customers could not understand the Cust Service Rep and no problems were being resolved. NOTE TO MGT OF THAT COMPANY: Duh!!!!!

Cigarick, those leftovers making 11K/year are no "wizards". Trust me on that. I'm telling you from experience and frustration.

well, having been "downsized" out of a job i'd held for nearly 4 years ("after Y2K losses, we just have to let some executives go!") and then IMMEDIATELY replaced with an Indian citizen brought over to do MY job in MY country, you can probably guess what my opinion is.

If you all have 10 hotdogs, and others have none, you can give 9 hotdogs away and still eat.

They are people too.

This goes beyond the monetary issue. The export of IT jobs is a matter of national security. Not in the short run but most definitely in the long run.
But most executives are only concerned about next quarter's bottom line not where we'll be in 5 years.

An an IT worker, I have no problem with fair competition and despite economic downturns, the influx of foreign workers and other negative economic influences, I've managed to work hard to be the best I can be in my field. I have managed to move forward in my career when many of my colleagues move backward.

One thing that I do notice with the influx of foreign workers is are major cultural integration and communication issues. This is not always good for a corporate culture.

Oh well......
I don't necessarily blame the Indians. I do have a major issue with the short sighted executives, many of who have never taken any time to understand IT, who decide to outsource out of country like this. There are so many hidden costs they they are just to damn stupid to understand.

well, that's an airline that won't see another dime from as many people i can tell about it. damn, but i hate that kind of corporate behavior. talk about betraying one's country. :P

i don't have anything against people from india coming here to work. most of the guys i dealt with did niche consulting and filled a gap that citizen workers here truly couldn't fill. but IF an american citizen can do the work and do it well, and IF that citizen gets a kick in the ass and a pink slip so a foreign worker can take his job, THAT makes me angry.

oh, and sgt? i and many other americans would give someone the shirt off our backs if we saw someone who needed it more. we'd do it willingly and with a smile. but when someone comes along and STEALS that shirt, i and many other americans can get downright pissed off and want to do something about it.

it's called the "principle of the matter."

i know that you're posting this trying to sound like a "liberal," but speaking as someone who's voted the big D down the line since i turned 18, it ain't working. your comments don't resemble any liberal i've ever known, including the steelworkers and cops and firefighters who have, in the interest of the blue collar american, voted democrat and were proud to call themselves liberals.

don't confuse us with the far, far left wing radicals. we're not one and the same.

To that i say , i don't mind giving ....it's just when and where or to who that bugs me.
talking about hotdogs ?.....i'll eat two and save three for later .... toss two in a freezerbag for tomorrow .... then i'll ask the niehborhood kids if they might want one....charity begins at home.....we're so messed up at home because wer'e off "fixing" everyone else ! think ahead

contendertotes: well said, and d'accord.

instead of all the brouhaha about the 10 commandments and all, i think we should have CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME inscribed all over the place.
