Now this is for "voting" not listings. If you just can't make up your mind and need to split a vote, that's OK. If you just want to nominate a couple, that's OK. But, we're looking for a vote for "best".
Food for thought (I'm sure there are plenty more):
Longest Day
Tora Tora Tora
Midway
Gettysburg
The Alamo
The Green Berets
Apocalypse Now

...my vote is for Tora Tora Tora, but I may change it depending on what else gets nominated.

Now that I think about it Casablanca was a war movie too, so that would be on my list as well.

Very tough. I like 'em all. If I had to pick one I guess it would be...

Apocalypse Now

I've got "Redux" on order. I hear it's very good.

Sylance....you had me going there, too. It was left off intentionally with the hopes that no one would nominate it.

No series, but Band of Brothers is in a class of its own. I considered Combat, too. I wouldn't miss that show when I was a boy.

I agree Saving Private Ryan is one of the best movies. It exists at a level with few neighbors. However, the above mentioned movies are all great (except Pearl Harbor of course.)

How bout, “When Trumpets Fade” and “Bravo Two Zero?”

#1 Saving Private Ryan.
#2 Patton
#3 Longest Day
#4 Midway
#5 Kelly's Heroes (best comedy/war film)

I also loved the Patriot and BraveHeart. In fact I was up until last year a huge Mel fan but will never ever support anything Mel Gibson does from here on.

I couldn't even finish "The Thin Red Line." It's all taste, but to me the director tried to hard to be artsy. I couldn't stand that movie.

How bout bringing some happy Cold War memories in: Red Dawn.

While we're on "bridges", I remember a movie called The Bridge where a bunch of teenage Nazis were ordered to defend a bridge. Very touching. Made an impression on me way back then. Anyone remember that one? If we're going to accept Kelly's Heroes as a war movie then I change my vote to that one! Donald Sutherland...LMAO!

I am going to take this in a different direction. Some have war as a background in the movie or are on the verge of war. Please bear with me for I am still wet behind the ears.

1.) Top Gun (I remember signing up for free posters with the Navy because of this. Little did I know that recruiters would show up at my door.)
2.) Stripes (C'mon, it's Czechoslovakia! We zip in, we pick 'em up, we zip right out again! We're not going to Moscow. It's Czechoslovakia! It's like we're going into Wisconsin!)
3.) The Bridge on the River Kwai (I will be 31 in 3 weeks so I know some old movies)
4.) The Day After (The best movie portraying a nuclear war)
5.) Dirty Dozen (Jim Brown, Charles Bronson, Ernie Borgnine, Kojak, Lee Marvin. A real man's movie)
6.) Crimson Tide (I dont know why, I just have to watch it whenever it is on. Also Hunt for Red October)
7.) Full Metal Jacket (Probably the greatest first half of a movie of all time)
8.) The Atomic Cafe (Duck & Cover)
9.) Hamburger Hill (Never got the recongnition because it was sandwiched between Platoon and Full Metal Jacket.
10.) The Crossing (Gotta love Georgie Washington. I am from Bristol PA, just a couple miles from where this took place. You gotta be amazed that this country of ours is less than 250 years old.)

Does Star Wars count towards this?

Does anyone remember that movie with Sly Stallone when they play soccer and plan that escape from the prison camp? Its the one where they are ready to leave at half time and end up staying to beat the Germans. Pele is in it also. I know it is not The Great Escape.

One of the greatest war-related movies is "The Best Years of Our Lives" produced in 1946. It gives a very realistic portrayal of the difficulty of WWII soldiers returning home to their civilian lives. Some great performances.

I also forgot to mention "We Were Soldiers", "Zulu", and the above. There are alot of great war movies!

Am I the only one who's ever seen "The Siege of Firebase Gloria"?

Patton (George C. Scotts opening speech is mesmerising)
Battle of the Bulge (Book'em Danno)
Star Wars (Hey... it's got "Wars" in the title)
Saving Private Ryan (not to be confused with "Shaving Ryan's Privates)
Apocolypse Now (also known as "Pork Lips Now" in some areas)
Kelly's Heros (Clint, Telly and Don Rickles - what a combination)
Tora, Tora, Tora (you should always include a movie with sub-titles)
The Longest Day (just watched it the other day - what an All Star cast including John Wayne)
The Green Berets (John Wayne again)

dbguru,

Why won't you support Mel Gibson anymore?> I'm curious to know what he did to offend you?

His new film, The Passion for the Christ is well worth seeing (or so my wife told me she got to see a the movie already). I ahve a feeling that it will be an awesome film that will speak to everyone that sees it!

Matt
