mr russert

i thank you personally for your interview with the president.

i, as i'm sure many others, had hoped for a professional interview, but were concerned it might not have been possible, given the setting.

my respect for you as a journalist has grown 100 fold.

i should not have been surprised that you handled the interview with professional courtesy and journalistic integrity.

russert asked the same questions over an over again, I think in all six questions were asked, like he was trying to trip-up George W. Bush. It is my opinion like Tataglia ( Godfather I )russert is no more than a pimp. JonR

JonR,
Thats probably, so he could get a straight answer. Bush is pretty good at answering everything but the question. Sort of Like Rummy, testifying in the senete. Nice answer, but doesn't answer the question asked.

Actually, most of the questions were answered, but the answers were not what Russert wanted.

An interviewer should ask direct questions, and it's OK to re-ask if not answered the first time. But he re-worded several of the questions several times.

Russert is the best in the media today. But that interview may have been his worst.

He not only asked questions to provoke a response, he deliberately tried to corner the President whent that should not have been the point.

And he seemed like he was campaigning against the President.
What self respecting reporter asks "will you put a hold on all tax cuts until the budget is balanced?"
And when the President correctly responds with "it depends on what the economy does", Russert simply repeats the question.

It was a joke, and Russert lost credibility with me.

Tim has fallen to the MIGHTY LEFT.

It's a shame.

So sorry to hear about you wetting your bed, but all cannot be perfect!

As far as the Russert interview goes, he did act like he had his mind set on getting his answers and only what he wanted to hear! Bad interview! GWB is not the best at this type of forum and he would have responded better with a more middle of the road interviewer....not lefty Russert!

Its clear that Russert, Matthews and the other so-called political reporters at NBC hate Dubya and are working hard to defeat him in November.

None of this should come as a surprise to anybody who can read.

i didn't see this interview, so i can't comment on it. but as a former journalist, i DO want to ask this: if you had been the interviewer, would you accept GWB's answers at face value if/when he did not answer your question -- or evaded it?

i'm not saying GWB did or didn't do this (again, i didn't see the interview), but it seems like you're saying that's what an interviewer SHOULD do --

ask a question
get a reply but not an answer to the question
ask another question
repeat

so i'm just curious about what you'd do if you were interviewing the president on issues that many in this country are concerned about.

The questions, for the most part, were answered.
Tiim didn't like the answers, so he kept trying to get a response.

Maybe he didn't believe the President. If that's the case, he should have said so.
When the President said he did not go AWOL, Russert responded by repeating the same question worded differently.
When the President told Tim that he could not guarantee the status of future tax cuts, Russert nearly begged him to comply.

Despite Tim Russerts democratic party background, he has always been the best of the best as far as reporters go. He usually hides his own beliefs in the name of honest news.

He did not do that and he embarrassed himself while showing terrible disrespect for our President.

I hope this was will not be the norm for him in the future, because he lost a lot of credibility with me and I am sure many others.

As the old saying goes, "Don't ask the question if you don't want to hear the answer".
Or in this case, if you don't get the answer you want.

If he were a young buck reporter cutting his teeth on that interview, his career would be over.

well, now i wish i would have watched the thing. :P

anyone know of a site where the text is up? -- not just excerpts but the whole thing.

there's a difference between putting on the pressure to get a straight answer and putting on the heat because you didn't LIKE the straight answer that was given. a good journalist should know where that line is and how to deliver it. prod, yes; badger, no.
