Desperate to help a BOTL

okay -- here's a dilemma. you know a BOTL who is in extreme pain. he's been fighting it, and his current doctor gives him a pittance of pain meds (narcotic). the meds help, but they're not nearly enough to get him through the day. he has about 4 hours of not being in agony out of 24 hours.

the good news: he FINALLY got referred to a pain mgmt. specialist, and will see that doctor in 10 days or so.

the bad news: he has 10+ more days to try to make it through with just 4 hours a day of relief for what (trust me; i know) is hellish, tortuous pain.

what can be done? any ideas at all? (email me at BBELTRISI at ec.rr.com if you want).

i feel so awful about this. i have been in a pain mgmt. program for 2 years. i have adequate pain medicine, thank god. but i remember being exactly where he is now, and i remember how it made me wish i'd just die rather than to face another day of that bone-crushing pain. *sigh* it's driving me up a nut to know that a brother's out there suffering through this right now and having no idea what can be done to help him. well, i DO have one idea, but that's not exactly legal or without risk.

seriously, if anyone has any ideas, please let me know. i've been where he is, and it's absolute torture. a man should NOT have to "live" like this -- not for a day; i don't know he'll make it through ten. i DO know that he WILL (finally) get appropriate treatment when he sees the specialist; i just wish there were some way he didn't have to live in agony until then. :/

I have heard of accupuncture to help with chronic pain. I haven't tried it or endorse it, just what I have heard...

chip: thanks, man. i've had it and it didn't help me (made it worse in my case), but i've had friends who benefitted greatly from accupuncture and accupressure both.

thing is, this guy has been out of work for awhile and isn't yet on social security, so he doesn't have the $ for such treatment.

it really sucks to be broke and in pain. it's like relief is within sight -- just not within his reach. not for another 10 or so days. having been through it myself, it turns my stomach to think of anyone else going through it, too. pain medicine is HERE for a reason. it pisses me off that some docs are so paranoid of being audited by the DEA that they refuse to use it to treat those who NEED it.

yes, the doc referred him (finally) to an anesthesiologist who can and WILL (finally) treat the guy's pain appropriately and adequately. until then, the doc gives him 2 weeks worth of meds for a 4 week wait. nice. real nice.

and maybe that doc just doesn't "get" the kind of hell his patient will go through for that 2-week gap. i've been there, though, and this is like watching a good man about to be tortured -- i just wish i could stop it from happening. there's just got to be a way to help him out.

I could send him some cigars. Not sure what else I can do. He will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I thank the God that I know everyday for the basic things I take for granted (health, good life, etc...)
