DELRAY BEACH -- Daniel Robinson says he hasn't had a drink since Christmas.

And he hasn't driven a car since well before then.

But that didn't stop the 40-year-old Delray Beach man from getting arrested on a drunken driving charge Tuesday.

Robinson was motoring around town on a gasoline-powered scooter about 2 a.m. when a police officer saw him make a right turn on a red light on Atlantic Avenue without stopping, according to an arrest report.

It was the second time DUI specialist Vinnie Gray had stopped Robinson, though the first time Robinson had been driving a car.

"He says, 'Hey, Dan. How are you?' " a frustrated Robinson said of Gray Tuesday afternoon when he stopped by the police department to pick up his red and black California scooter. "He's the king of DUIs."

Robinson refused to take a breath test or perform roadside sobriety tests. Gray noted the odor of alcohol and said Robinson "appeared severely impaired," according to the report. Gray also cited him for driving with a suspended license.

"It's stupid," Robinson said of his arrest.

Tuesday's ticket was Robinson's third DUI. After losing his driver license, he bought the scooter for $600 a year ago to get to and from work as a laborer for a property management company, he said. He said he thought he was allowed to ride it without a license.

On Tuesday afternoon, police told Robinson he had to walk his scooter home because he wasn't allowed to operate any motorized vehicle.

"The law is: he is not to drive," police spokesman Jeff Messer said. "The fact that he is not driving a 3,000-pound vehicle is wonderful."

Are you posting this article 65 because you think the cops are wrong, you think the cops are right, or you just think its an interesting story?

How can I pick a fight with you when I don't know your position? :o)

I would say the cops are right, it is a motorized bike and that’s the law, plus each year they are large numbers of scooter related deaths and this is one thing that should be and must be stomped out.
