Here's an email I just received...I'd like to hear opinions about what I consider misleading by
leaving out the fact that the Onyx RE 2000 was the cigar in review and instead just stating a "square pressed" Onyx.
.............."Valid thru the end of business on Thursday May 3rd
Two Big Monster Cigars .... One really super price.
ONYX #750 and ONYX # 852
Handmade in La Romana, Dominican Republic
Jet Black Maduro Wrappers Only
Just this week Cigar Aficionado's Cigar Insider Magazine gave a square pressed Onyx a 94 rating, which, if my memory serves me correctly, may be the highest rating ever given to a cigar.
Personally, I don't put a lot of stock in other people's ratings because I'm only concerned with what I like.... not what someone else likes.
Nevertheless, the rating is sure to stir a lot of interest in the ONYX brand.

This square pressed Onyx is pretty new and in short supply... BUT... we have a pretty healthy supply of two Onyx sizes: The No. 750, a 7-inch cigar with a 50 ring. The No. 852, an 8-inch cigar with a 52 ring.
For the next week we're putting both these cigars on sale at one low price: 45 BUCKS !!
You rate 'em for yourself."

I am on the same mailing list, as I am sure most of the guys and gals on this forum are, I was surprised to see the author, who writes a column for Smoke, use a Cigar Aficinado rating! I enjoy his catalog more than most catalogs that I recieve! Onyx is a nice looking cigar, but I hardly would give them such a "lofty" rating! Charlie

The new Onyx Reserve that got the 94 rating and the old Onyx have *nothing* in common except the name. The new Onyx Reserve is an excellent cigar with a dark broadleaf wrapper and filler that contains Peruvian ligero tobacco. I've smoked several and like them. These were originally made to be Maduro Peruvian Montes for Lew Rothman, but since Lew bought Lane, Ltd. they decided to market them as Onyx.

The old Onyx has a Mexican wrappper and Mexican tabac in the filler also. These, IMO, are nasty.

Misleading? Yes.

Ewe gotta read between da lines... Lets see translation: "I gotta ton of cigars and want to dump them ata profit"LOL!!
The new ones are very tasty!! Unlike the old ones with the cooked maduro wrapper that promised a lotta flavor but didn't deliver...JMHO>>

The only Onyx I have ever smoked was the one I received at CA's Big Smoke. I thought it was bad. Not the worst I have smoked but still couldn't finish the DOGROCKET.

This issue was touched on in aberdeen's earlier thread "question for Cigar International honcho". When I read that earlier thread just moments ago, before reading this one, this e-mail ad was exactly what came to my mind! It IS misleading, and it disappoints me! I've had the Onyx RESERVE recently, and it really is good. Shame, shame!

I have all my Ciger Insiders and CAs in storage, but I recall CI giving all the Dom Bolivars 90 + and then when CA came out most of them got in the low 80s.

I have noticed this rating discrepency often. I usually get the cigar Insider, then two weeks later CA. And it has happened on many more than one time that the same cigar in CI was given a much different rating in CA. I won't be getting any more issues of CA as my subscription has expired, but you can bet the new Onyx will be rated in the next CA, I would be interested at what.

Yes I think it is misleading. Although I am informed enough to know those sizes are not in the Onyx reserve line, others may not know and purchase these without investigating first. Everyone has to beware what the seller is trying to sell. Thats is why I stick to reputable dealers when buying products that I cannot see first hand.
