Howard Stern booted off air
Clear Channel Radio suspends host to protect listeners from indecency

Howard Stern, the self-proclaimed "King of All Media," won't be heard by much of his audience now that Clear Channel Communications has deemed his show too indecent for broadcast.

The company made its decision after assessing the content of yesterday's Howard Stern Show.

"It was vulgar, offensive, and insulting, not just to women and African-Americans but to anyone with a sense of common decency," said John Hogan, president and CEO of Clear Channel Radio. "We will not air Howard Stern on Clear Channel stations until we are assured that his show will conform to acceptable standards of responsible broadcasting."

Clear Channel has some 1,200 radio stations in the U.S., though it's unclear how many of those broadcast Stern's program.

The show itself is syndicated by a unit of Viacom, which also owns CBS Television. Both CBS and Viacom recently have come under fire after singer Janet Jackson bared her breast during the halftime show of this year's Super Bowl broadcast.

Earlier today, Clear Channel announced what it calls a "Responsible Broadcasting Initiative" to make sure the material aired by its radio stations conforms to the standards and sensibilities of the local communities they serve.

The company is instituting a zero-tolerance policy for indecent content which will include companywide training and automatic suspensions for anyone that the FCC alleges has violated indecency rules on the air.

"We will suspend the DJ in question, and perform a swift investigation," said Mark Mays, president and COO of Clear Channel Communications. "If we or the government ultimately determine the offending broadcast is indecent, the DJ will be terminated without delay."

"If a DJ is found to be in violation of FCC rules, there will be no appeals and no intermediate steps," added Hogan. "If they break the law by broadcasting indecent material, they will not work for Clear Channel."

The San Antonio-based company also says all of its contracts with on-air performers are being modified to ensure that DJs share financial responsibility if they utter indecent material on the air.

Just yesterday, Clear Channel ousted another shock jock from its airwaves.

Bubba the Love Sponge was squeezed from his position at a Tampa, Fla., station for allowing indecent material on the air.

Bubba, whose real name is Todd Clem, was the source of a proposed $755,000 fine against Clear Channel for more than two dozen claims of breaches of indecency laws over the last three years.

the few times i watched a bit of his show, i found it to be crass, adolescent, and just plain tacky, but by using the remote he was gone.

why is he gone, but not the suspected drug user limbaugh still allowed to broadcast venom.

at least stern was not spewing hatred and nastiness like i do here.

I liked his movie. I read one of his books, it was great. I can't stand to listen to the radio show or watch the TV show. With Howard, you know what you're gonna get. If you know you will be offended, you don't have to listen. I choose not to listen or watch.

Glad I will still be able to hear him. He makes me laugh. If anyone dont like it, don't listen. Yet you can have sex scenes on NYPD Blue. I dont get it.

for me it's not the sex talk, it's the crassness, like high school kids pointing at a girl who has a button open on her blouse.

What a poorly written article. It doesn't even say what he did to get booted.

I could care less what he did, I for one would like to see him jailed for 20 years, then after the sentence have him put to death on pay per view.

When you tune into Howard you know what you are getting. If you dont like him, change the station.

While I am not a big Stern fan, I do watch his show on E from time to time.

Everyone has different tastes. This is why there are a variety of things for everyone. To ban one person (Stern) because you dont like what he says borders on infringing on Freedom of Speech.

Different strokes for different folks.

Hell, Im all for freedom of speech, but if his show was under the same rules as lets say the movie industry, he would definatley be rated "R" . Now my 11 year old daughter can not get into an "R" rated movie alone because it has been deemed inappropriate for an 11 year old. No one seems to have issue with this or feels that it is infriging on anyones freedoms. His show is without a doubt adult in content, and it is broadcast freely and can be picked up by anyone with a radio. There has to be SOME kind of scrutiny.

That is very true BeatDragon. But the other side is that we aren't all 11 year old girls. Some of us are adults and enjoy listening to things which might be deemed inappropriate for kids.

Should all radio programming be the equivalent of Barney and the Telletubies? I shouldn't be punished and not able to listen to what I want because someone isn't monitoring what their daughter is listening to. I'm not talking about you specifically BeatDragon just in general.

I would hope common sense would play a part in the scrutinizing, but I work for a local government and I know thats a pipe dream!

And yeah, I enjoy forms of entertainment that would be inanpropriate for kids, and Im not against some one elses right to enjoys such things. IMHO his schtik is just a bit much for Radio.

You can say I am taking this to the extreme but what about all the immoral activity on regular television? People killing other people, people breaking laws speeding through streets and through red lights, people lying, cheating, stealing. Doesn't that all count? I don't here people saying that we should ban all TV that shows people robbing a 7-11 cause it gives kids the idea to rob one. If your kids are brought up correctly, you should have no problems. There are some exceptions but usually they will be able to decipher what is right and what is wrong in life if you give them a good foundation to make those decisions. I guess we are supposed to watch The Disney channel or Barney all the time. Wait, Barney is supposed to be racist. I am going to make my kid stop having fun singing and dancing because he might be.

I am not a die hard listener to Stern. I do listen to him almost every day but it depends on what is happening on his show. If he is interviewing someone I am interested in, I will listen. If he talks about a mother and son kissing, I change the station. I only listen to the parts that interest me. Should he be on XM radio or such? Probably. But I am glad that I can still listen to him WHEN I CHOOSE TO for free. Speaking of FREE, isn't this Country the Land of the Free?

I think people just have a hatred for him. Why? Because he is offensive? I am not a big religion freak so don't take it as I am one but just from watching the Passion last night and for any of you who have seen it, isn't the true message of the movie to forgive others and to love your enemy because there is no reward in loving just the people that love you? I know I butchered that part.

Also, that God that CBID is free. I love this site.

That's why I'm so curious as to what exactly he did. Maybe he did deserve to get the boot. Maybe not. We don't know. Does anyone know?

He could have been booted for just about anything he says or said! My wife listens to him, and I think he is horrible, but I hope he stays off the air!

As a reason for the action, Clear Channel cited Stern's interview on Tuesday with Rick Solomon, the man who was filmed having sex with hotel heiress and Fox reality star Paris Hilton in a video widely distributed on the Internet.

According to a transcript released by Clear Channel, Stern asked Solomon about his sexual practices and referred to the size of certain body parts. Using a racist term, a caller asked Solomon if he had ever had relations with any famous black women.

"It was vulgar, offensive and insulting, not just to women and African-Americans but to anyone with a sense of common decency," said Hogan.

No worse then what you would see or hear on Dave Chapelle's show on Comedy Central.

I have to say... Chapelle's show is funny. It is on cable though just like Stern's E-show. I just bought the 1st season of Chapelle on DVD. It is funny.

I think one of the callers on Stern's show called someone an N word. Like it is never used anywhere else. But that is another debate for another time.
