Rosie O'Donnell to marry girlfriend in San Francisco

02-26) 06:50 PST SAN FRANCISCO (AP) --

Former talk show host Rosie O'Donnell said she planned to marry her longtime girlfriend Thursday in San Francisco, where more than 3,300 other same-sex couples have tied the knot since Feb. 12.

O'Donnell announced her planned wedding to Kelli Carpenter on ABC's "Good Morning America," just two days after President Bush called for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

She said the president's call is what inspired her to come to San Francisco, where city officials continue to perform same-sex weddings even as state courts are considering the legality of those marriages.

"I think the actions of the president are, in my opinion, the most vile and hateful words ever spoken by a sitting president," O'Donnell said on the program. "I am stunned and I'm horrified.

"I find this proposed amendment very, very, very, very shocking. And immoral. And, you know, if civil disobedience is the way to go about change, then I think a lot of people will be going to San Francisco. And I hope they put more people on the steps to marry as many people as show up. And I hope everyone shows up."

O'Donnell said she decided to marry Carpenter, a former dancer and marketing director at Nickelodeon, during her recent trial in New York over the now-defunct Rosie magazine.

"We applied for spousal privilege and were denied it by the state. As a result, everything that I said to Kelli, every letter that I wrote her, every e-mail, every correspondence and conversation was entered into the record," O'Donnell said. "After the trial, I am now and will forever be a total proponent of gay marriage."

rick: "butch" might be meant as a nasty name, but there are some butch lesbians who wear it very proudly.

i'm very proud to call several butches my friends.

they've certainly been there for me and my wife many times -- helping us move when i was too gimpy to do anything, for instance. i'll never understand why this kind of hatred exists. never.

She is a half hippo half dog beast, who wants to strip this nation of its guns. She is not human but a grim outlook of the dangers of crossbreeding zoological animals.

Yo Cavallo: I believe the word RDC used was " Bitch ". Rosie IMHO is a foul mouth, slutty, bitch. She is against guns but it's okay for her childrens bodyguard to carry one. She wants all gays to come out of the closet, but she hid in a closet most of her life and the only reason she came out was because the entire free world outted her. OBTW I don't feel anyone should have to hide in a closet hmmmm well okay maybe Liberals. I have nothing against gays or lesbians as I believe they are born to their life style. However Rosie is well, a pig by any other name is still a pig. JonR

He regards the mud-splattered fray with great trepidation, but boldly steps in.

I would love to someone do a study to see how these same-sex unions compare in longevity to man-women wedding licenses issued during the same period. It should be easy to do: these licenses are all public record. Simply select your statistical sample and telephone poll to see if they're still together in a year, 2 years etc.

If you want to use this for your doctoral thesis, no need to credit me for the idea, either. You're welcome to it ;)

Rosie O'Donnell Weds Girlfriend

SAN FRANCISCO — Rosie O'Donnell (search) has married her longtime girlfriend in San Francisco.

O'Donnell and Kelli Carpenter flew across the country Thursday to marry tie the knot in the city where more than 3,300 other same-sex couples have wed since Feb. 12.

The couple traveled to San Francisco from New York on Thursday morning, said Cindi Berger, O'Donnell's publicist.

"We, too, have a dream of equality for all families," the comedian and former talk show host said in a statement. "The only way changes are made in society is when people like Mayor Gavin Newsom have the courage to stand up against injustice."

Earlier Thursday, O'Donnell announced her wedding plans on ABC's "Good Morning America," just two days after President Bush (search) called for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

During the case, she referred to Carpenter as her wife.

I don't care if gays want to be legally bound to each other...just don't call it marriage.

Call it bound and gagged, or gay ever after, or same-sex-age, gay-love-ship, commit-gay-ment, or perhaps closet made (play on words)...or maybe gayage...just don't call it marriage.

It's appalling to think that the union between a man and his wife is now being discriminated against and degraded by a group of same sex people that, yeah, love each other, but should create a distinguishing union, ceremony, title, and so on for themselves.

Marriage is for a man and a woman...heck, even polygomists know that!

There's only one married man for me...Marla

So much for the sanctity of divorce.

Any guesses about how long until Rosie & Co. separate?

Hey, what she does is HER buisness. I have no beef with anybody wanting to get married. Be it a man and woman, two women or two men. I think if you are in love, you should have the opportunity to marry.

usahog: i think you're confusing rosie o'donnell and roseann barr. roseann was the one who butchered the national anthem.

rick: yeah, i didn't catch the "i" instead of the "u" in the original. sad.

The purpose of marriage is to become a family; to legitimize your children and provide unity. The gays are using it to gain social and tax benefits. Again another slam to our insurance rates if a couple hundred thousand gays marry and they legalize their status.

Gay couples have been around since the beginning of history. I hold no negative opinion on their lifestyle. Hell, I grew up in the S.F. Bay Area. I do ,however I do not appreciate their mockery of the marital bond.

sorry, but it's not a mockery. gay MARRIAGE has been around for centuries -- long before christianity hit the scene even.

my brother's gay. he has no desire to marry his partner to gain anything from it but a) the LEGAL rights conferred upon other married couples (like to have a say in his partner's medical decisions as a husband and wife would have) and b) the LEGAL protection for THEIR SON AND DAUGHTER that other married parents have.

gays and lesbians also have families to protect. this amendment, though, doesn't give a damn about their families, their children. some folks' kids matter more than other folks' kids.
