I saw a film of Frank and Elvis together doing "My Way". You would think that Frank is the better singer, but Elvis was killing him. His voice was just stronger. So I give one nod to Elvis.

BTW, I love Kiss, but I would be hard pressed to put Paul Stanley in a list of best singers. I guess that means we can add Steven Tyler or Bon Scott, etc. LOL!

Geoff Tate of Queensryche
Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden
King Diamond (just for the shear uniqueness)
Michael Sweet of Stryper
Rob Halford of Judas Priest because nobody can scream like him

Sorry I'm stuck in the 80's

If we are going with rock lead men, what about Diamond Dave?

You can dis Paul Stanley, but how many rock singers have appeared in a starring role in a Broadway production? I was able to catch him in Toronto at the Pantages theater. You know...the one that was built specifically for The Phantom of the Opera. He was spectacular!

Go back and listen to Alive! or his solo work. He's worthy of a 2nd look. Just because he's in a glitzy band called Kiss, most people want to dismiss him.

I'm not a big Elvis fan, but to have a list of best singers without him on top is ridiculous.

If we're choosing on style, I offer the following:
Joe Cocker
Frank
Natalie Merchant
Susan Tedeschi (beats Janis at her own game)
Peter Wolf

I'm sure I missed many.

Probably the greatest are Opera stars
(I've sung both popular and classical techniques and
the classical stuff is generally much more demanding)
Luciano Pavarotti,
Placido Domingo
Joan Sutherland,
Beverly Sills

Outside of opera - the singers that impress me most with their vocal technique have been...

Celine Dion,
Mariah Carey,
Jon Anderson,
Elvis Presley,
James Taylor

UDO "THE TANK" DIRKSCHNEIDER!!!!

I actually thought of putting him on my list. But he is more scream then sing. (not that there is anything wrong with that). If thre was a list of most unique sounding singer I'd rank him very high.

monserrat cabale

if you haven't heard them, email me your address and i will send you some cd's that could bring tears to your eyes.

i also have some well edited caruso. well edited meaning the scratches are gone and the cd is pretty good for having been recorded in the 30's.

plabonte you are killing me. King Diamond, you stole my thunder there. Udo. Man oh man. Now I love the hard stuff, but there is singing, and there is metal singing.

Charlotte Church (I think that's her name, the Irish teen)
Whitney Houston (pre-drugs)
Elvis Presley
Barry White
always loved Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett and those guys when in the right mood.
Nat King Cole

How about Jack Russell, before that Once Bitten stuff? Did a hell of a Robert Plant imitation.

I also like the guy from Cake.
Tori Amos.
The girl from Evanescence.

Although there are many I listen to more, Sinatra and Nat King Cole were both about as great technically as any that ever lived. Listen to both of their phrasing. Either would smooth right through place where any mortal human would have taken a breath.

I see some of you are mistaking great singers for just good singers who sing great songs.

Paul Stanley?
Sammy Hagar?
Dio?
Diamond Dave? Come on now!
Elvis? that's right,Big E. Product of times and songs he song.

I just think some of you get caught up in the songs rather then the actual singing part.

"I just think some of you get caught up in the songs rather then the actual singing part."

Have you listened to "Phantom of the Opera"? Would you conclude that it's musical numbers are some of the hardest to perform? While Crawford starred in and defined the role for anyone else to follow behind him, Paul Stanley did to his credit and talent a magnificent job during his run in Toronto.

http://www.extreme-online.com/features/26/26a.htm

I'm basing it on talent, not how he looks or acts. He has the hair on the back of your neck raised. If you can find a copy of his performance(usually at Kiss Expos)by all means buy it. You will not be disappointed.

It took a lot of guts to take on the role, but it wasn't just some publicity gimmick to put people in the seats. It's been a passion of Paul's to do opera, but his Kiss commitments take up most of his time, well that and his charity work.

As far as Dio...go back to Rainbow and his early solo material as well as his stint with Black Sabbath...he can wail a tune out there and keep a note for a sustained period.

Bette Midler
Annie Lennox

Danny Elfman- Highly underrated. One of the best live voices I have heard. Does a yodel that will knock your socks off.
