Ok guys...this is my first jump over to the miscellaneous board, so here we go...

Here's the deal: For those of you who don't know, I'm a college student (a Jr. at Middle Tenn. State U). Spring Break starts March 20th. Me and some of my buddies and fraternity brothers are going to Panama City Beach for the week. All well and good, right??

Wrong...I'm a poor college student...much of which can be attributed to my love for cigars and addiction to CBid!!! My CBid addiction kinda blew the money that I'd thought I'd saved for the trip...I need money to pay for it!

Anybody got any decent ideas as to how I can raise about $200 in two weeks? Jobs are very hard to come by in this college town, by the way. I know this is crazy, but hey...I've done crazier things.

I've thought about selling some 'gars, but that kills me to think of!

BTW, if you figure out how to raise $200 in 2 weeks (without working), you let all of us know.

Put on some work clothes, go to a neighborhood, and look for some hourly work in someones yard. I never had a "job" growing up, but I cut a lot of grass and made good money. Better money than working somewhere.

I read in the paper how the job market is the worst for teens in 50 years, yet I still don't have any coming by my house and looking to cut grass, trim bushes, pet sit, etc.

first stop crying. do you want cigars or spring break where you can get drunk and throw up.

second don't take the trip that you already spent the money you had saved. try studying instead.

third i can't belief their isn't a job in any town if you get off your ass out and look for one.

beta:

a few ideas from my own college days --

- donate sperm

- give plasma for pay (most places still pay for plasma; blood you donate, but plasma gets the dollahs)

- contests? any $50 for the best karaoke singer or contests like that near you?

- put up signs offering to type up term papers (you'd be surprised)

- if you have a campus job place, go there and see if they have anything; a lot of folks want to hire college students to help them move, paint, do odd jobs, etc.

- put up a flyer in groceries and laundromats advertising what kind of work you can do -- yard work, help moving, tutoring, whatEVER you can do.

- ditto the above, only advertise to be a "gopher" for the elderly and shut in: note that you could run errands, do grocery shopping, take them to doctor appointments, etc.

and if nothing's going on with all that, consider:

- pawn shops: esp. if you need the money now but will make some or have some later on. you can hock your stuff and get it out later.

- payday loans: if you have a job, you can get an advance. thing is the interest is through the roof, but it's an option if you just gottahavethemoneyNOW!

- student loan: some schools will give their students short-term loans. usually this is emergency based only (your car broke and you commute, etc.), but some schools will loan like up to $300-500 w/o any questions. again, though, ya gotta pay it back.

- college "garage" sale: get rid of some of the crap you don't need and make some $, assuming you have tag sale type stuff to get rid of.

- hit up friends and family members. ask for loans or, better yet, ask them for $ in exchange for some service you can do later (this summer) -- housework, babysitting IOU, whatever

- if you can find a place willing to let you use their hose, grab a bucket and sponges and do a weekend carwash "for the cause." what cause? 'CAUSE YOU NEED DA MONEY!

good luck, bro. honestly, if i had to give i'd just send it to ya. :/

DOH! can't believe i forgot this one: TEMP AGENCIES.

register at as many as there are near you, and then call them early (0800) on any day that you're available to work.

you can do admin work (typing, filing, data entry) or manual labor.

if there's a Labor Ready agency near you, you can pretty much find work every morning, so long as your body can hack it, coz it ain't glamorous -- cleaning up construction sites and such.

the pay is crap for manual work, but as an admin temp i usually made around $10-14/hour.

Cavallo- haha yeah, i'm already planning the plasma thing...i've done it before.

Rick- First, i'm not crying...just getting some extra advice from you guys... I've already got ideas of my own.
Second, I'd like to spend a week just partying with my buddies and yes, getting drunk! By the way, I don't need to take the week studying... I think my 3.8 GPA and 5 consecutive Dean's List semesters will do me just fine. Besides, I'll only be in college once...I might as well make the best of my opportunities here. Work hard and party hard!!
Third, throwing the word "lazy" anywhere near my direction is laughable. Also, think about it...I go to school in a college town...the labor supply here for student-jobs greatly outweighs the demand.

I ran my own lawn service in high school for 2 years and made good money doing it...but that'd take way too long to set up here (not to mention I'm not here inthe summers).
Thanks for the advice guys.

Dude, come on yous a college what? lets just say Im very good at giving advise and making money. well in college I would wash cars, its like this find a corner and put up a sign and have atit. the other thing is yous can create a lottery, get people to give you money for a ticket with a number on it.then they are under the impression that they have a chance to win a tv or what ever you think that they may want to win. Its kinda up to you when and if the prize is actually given out, day and times may very. work every time, but you did't here that from me.

i went to college in a college town. i was under the impression that except for places like ucla all towns were college towns.

i used to take guys laundry in town for the extra quarters to wash my own clothes, i worked at sears part time, fronted for aluminum storm door and window salesmen, a ladies shoe store part time, and carried a vacum cleaner door to door. there is no place in this country where jobs in sales are not available. work on commission. you will find any sales job on commission can pay more and teach you more about the workings of the world, then social studies. hell, you can always get a job at a car wash and work long hours.

the guys have given you a different kind of response then i did because they are kinder and more gentle than i am. i'm more of a believer in self starting.

good that you maintain a high gp average and make the deans list. you might try a course in finances to teach you that your money is fixed and life has choices.

question: did the money come from you working or your parents or student loans?

I was going to make another smart- alec suggestion but I really wish you the best. If you really want this stinken' trip, borrow the money (offer collateral). Otherwise, forget it.

"WHAT? Did you at least take off the tags? My name was on the tags".

"what tags?"

Seth & MrTel- LMAO....hmmm there might be something there!

Rick- I worked for it last summer; and I'm on MTSU's Presidential Scholarship. I have no problem having a job and working...but that's not going to help me within the next 2 weeks (the whole process: applying, interviewing, etc.). I'm actually working a couple Nashville Predators games selling beer, but that'll only slightly help. I don't need a job regularly, I do just fine; but I planned poorly for this...It's called an accident, a mistake, a learning experience, etc.

I know you may think everyone else may be "gentle" or whatever, but look at it this way... I'm not asking for handouts (as your harsh response might suggest), I'm not asking for help, just ideas.
Like I said, I've got plenty of ideas of my own and I know that I'll get the money in time, but I just figured I might as well check with my BOTL to see if they've got anything I'd never thought of.

So please don't give me that tired old "get a job!" stuff because if you knew me you'd know how much of an enterprising individual I happen to be. In addition, I'm not worried about money to live on, just money for something extra that I *want* to do.

So I must say that your words, although appreciated, are quite presumptuous.

There's a lot of cash to be made quick in selling flowers....I did it for 20 years...

Just get a few buckets of pre-made stuff at a wholesaler and you'd be surprised at how quickly it will move...especially on a Friday/Saturday afternoon...

Make a sign saying something about poor college kid with good grades trying to make it to spring break...

Good luck beta...and have fun...I'm sure you'll make it!

presumptuous is the optimum word. one of the advantages of quick judgements is the ability to get to the next idea that requires a judgement call

one of the disadvantages is mistakes are made. that is why i am not an MD, i don't want to bury my mistakes, i'd rather eat them.

if i have, and it appears i have, made a misjudgemnt about you, then my apology is in order. i will temper it with the fact that i don't know much more about you then how to copy your posting name.

perhaps you are one of the better students, as you have posted, and perhaps, spring break means more to you at your age then it does to me at my age.

fortunately for you, the "gentler" folks have offered some excellent ideas.

there is much to be said about your fighting back at me, because you know i have misjudged you. i hope you never lose that edge.

i hope you do find away to get to spring break, not because it in itself is important, but in your ability to accomplish a goal.

i suspect a bright future for you.

live long and prosper.

Rick, Nice post (the last one).

Ideas - sell some of your older books, although now isn't the prime time.

Offer to source any research papers - not actually do the papers, just find the pertinant (sp?) sources and provide copies of them.

Offer editing services for mid term papers. Make sute the papers are coherent (sp?), footnotes are correct and checked. call attention to missing footnotes, etc.

Provide cramming help for mid terms, for those students that are struggling. Help them organize their notes, Help them focus on the important stuff (not straight tutoring).

Ask some of your instructors if they need some part time help, either grading papers or doing admin. work.

I sort of like the plasma idea but you can only do it once in the 2 weeks. Pays $25 here...that'll put a bite into the amount you need.

Plan B. As a student, haven't you had credit card offers up the wazoo? Call one. Set up a credit card now. It is extremely distastful to go into debt , but its a quick fix. If you are maxed out on other cards,it doesn't matter unless you have too many "lates".

They will give you a $200-$500 start up limit. Go take that card with you and enjoy yourself. Get home, cut it up into little pieces, forget the number and pay it off over time.

Thanks for the advice rayder. I've definitely steered clear of credit cards so far, but not a bad idea. Yeah, I've done the plasma thing off and on since last November.

I think I've found the solution though. I'll let ya'll know...

Blow off class, you already got the GPA, go door-to-door on a saturday asking about odd jobs, yardwork etc. I have about 15 teenagers in my nieghborhood, I would love to pay one of them to work with me. Remember, you can always re-take a class, you can never re-live a weekend! (Or a spring break in your case) This theory seems contradictory, but it kept me sane through Arch. school. These are the best times of you life, live them, you will have the rest of your life to work. Because when it is all over, will you regret not working more? Or not enjoying life/family/friends more?

You know the world needs ditch diggers too. Quit school and just party. Worry about it when you sober up (In a ditch). It could be a sign, your true calling. What about lying to your family and telling them your books and all your clothes were stolen. Just poking fun at you, hope you get your slush fund together and have a great time. Don't forget to wear your Jimmy hat.
