Anybody out there really computer savvy? My Anti-virus software has just alerted me that someone has tried to hack into my shiznit twice in the last half hour. My firewall is blocking the ass, but is there any other precautions I should take?

If you are on Broadband, get a router and run NAT.

I have a cable connection. You're talking to a complete computer idiot. I knew enough to buy the software and install it, but I just hope it is enough. So far it seems to be repelling the jackass.

- it sounds to me like your running a copy of Zone Alarm and Norton Antivirus at the same time ... that'll cause some problems if you don't set it up correctly ... I'd have to say that you had Norton Antivirus running when you installed Zone Alarm - or - updated your Norton Antivirus definitions while Zone Alarm was running ... you have to either install Norton AFTER Zone Alarm is already running - or possibly change a setting after you 'upgrade' your antivirus....

- just my two cents worth ... and I know you never mentioned Zone Alarm ... but that's what it sounds like is happening and that software is notorious for doing that to you ...

oh - and ummm.... no, I don't think you have a hacker trying to get access to your computer ... I think you have an open/closed port conflict with your software ...

.... and quit using pirated versions of software ... LOL - yea - if the above is correct ... you've likely stumbled upon a "freebie" version of Zone Alarm or Zone Alarm Pro ... I could be wrong about that ... then again - .....

Jimmy where are you coming up with zonealarm and pirated software from, it could just as easily be nortons internet security suite (ack pooh). And as he by his own admission is not computer savy he isn't so likely to be using pirated software.

MACS, if they are being blocked by your firewall you don't have much to worry about. I personally don't like norton, but if its working for you then thats all that really matters. It could well be someone scanning a block of i.p. addresses looking for weak spots. If your firewall is any good it will have just dropped the request and the guy on the other end won't even know there is a computer hooked up to your IP.

If you find yourself in need of help drop me a line with some details

Thanks guys. I should've been more specific. I have Norton Internet Security with Norton Personal Firewall installed. It ain't pirated and I have paid for the updates for the last 2 years (since I got the puter). The kid runs the update every friday, so the definitions should be good to go. The jerk has NOT gotten in yet, but the Internet Security alerts me every time he tries. It told me there were 8 unauthorized attempts to gain access and 2 attempts at actual hacking... or something like that.

Anyway... sounds like I am getting what I paid for. Thanks for the help and I will keep your addy handy!

In Norton Personal Firewall, block his IP address permanently.

You can do this under the internet zone control options. Add his IP to the restricted list. If he's good, he'll come at you with a new IP...Just keep restricting them. The good thing is, your firewall software is working fine!

If you want to have some fun, you can trace his IP address here and get an idea of where the attack is coming from.
