Domestic violence and men -- as victims

when you think of domestic violence (DV), what comes to mind? most folks think of a diminutive woman having her eyes blackened by her hulking brute of a husband. that's what it's like in the movies. that's what the ads on t.v. would have us believe.

however, the times they are a-changing. rather, more men are speaking out about domestic violence -- as the victims.

i am NOT saying that DV against women should be trivialized or overlooked. i've just been becoming more and more aware of just how many MEN are victims -- and they don't have nearly the resources for help that are available virtually everywhere for women.

also, men have a harder time being taken seriously. IF a guy works up the nerve to seek help, call the cops, etc., often times HE is the one who ends up going to jail!

i'll be posting some stats and such as we go, but for now, did you know that:

- the percentage of battered women is only SLIGHTLY higher than that of battered men?

- while more women are abused, more male victims of abuse end up being admitted to hospitals -- suggesting that a greater proportion of men received more serious injuries

- the majority of abusive wives do NOT act violently in self-defense, but rather initiate the violence

- one study, Behind, Closed Doors: Violence in the American Family, revealed that of couples reporting domestic abuse, 49% of spouses admitted they were BOTH violent. When questioned about the specifics of the incidents in the previous year, 27% of men claimed they were the sole perpetrators of that violence, compared to 24% of women.

just thought i'd toss this out for discussion.

I know a guy that's about 6'4", 220#, and his wife, about 5'4", less than 120#, started beating the crap out him less than a month after they got married. Their marriage lasted less than 6 months.

It would take a lot of restraint not to defend yourself in such a situation, but as soon as you did, you'd be the one going to jail.

rd: yeah, that happens a lot, unfortunately.

a lot of the guy cops would snicker at such cases with something like "so and so can't handle a little bitty woman!"

yeah, with that kind of understanding of what a guy's going through, SURE he's going to call the cops when his wife's beating on him -- and women don't just use hands and fists, ya know.

women abusers tend to use heavier duty stuff when it comes to doing the physical damage -- take a hot iron upside the head and call a guy a wuss for not being able to handle an "itty bitty woman." take getting scalded in your sleep by a gallon of boiling water. yeah, any "real man" could avoid that by brute strength, all right. :P

the old images -- cartoons -- of women beating men with frying pans and rolling pins are nothing compared to what they can and do use as abusers. all the muscle in the world isn't going to save your hide when you're asleep and she comes at you with a knife or a baseball bat.

more than that, though, women abusers use manipulation. she doesn't even HAVE to lay a finger on him to get his life screwed up. i've known women who would bang their heads against a wall and then call the cops to report that her husband did it to her. "right here's the mark, officer!" and off he goes to jail, after which he'll probably lose his job and the downward spiral goes from there.

when there are KIDS involved is when it's the worst, though. a man with kids will take EXTREME abuse -- because he knows that all she needs do is snap her fingers and he's off to jail, and the kids are hers.

I used to know a couple like that. She was average height, but beefy, and by that I don't mean overweight, just big-boned and muscular. Her husband was shorter than average height, skinny, and weak. She used to get drunk and beat the holy crap out of him. He'd be all bruised and cut up the next day. Don't know if they're still together...

Some believe that statistics now show that domestic violence(female-male) is on the increase, especially between teenagers, while male -female is decreasing. However, the old stereotypes as shown in cartoons(frying pans, etc.), continue....Some statistics show that the most violent domestic situation are in Lesbian relationships...But recent studies are showing that domestic violence is often a "mutual" destructive "dance", with responsibility on both parties....
