why would having a secular education only lead you to the left? i'll bet this board is loaded with people with a public education that attended public (secular) schools.

i believe is his entirely wrong and when the posts follow from publicly educated guys on the right, i will be proven correct.

eh. any unexamined life falls under the "closed-minded" catagory IMO.

i went to mostly secular schools, but the only "brainwashing" i got was that it was bad and wrong to be liberal or democrat.

i went to catholic school for awhile and got that i was bad and wrong, period. heh. plus i got bloody knuckles for not sitting up straight enough in my chair.

i went to indiana university and had all of 2 professors who i'd consider to be even remotely liberal. most of my profs (all but five in six years of FT study plus 2 FT summer sessions per year on top of that) were white christian men who had pretty conservative political views that came through LOUD AND CLEAR in the classroom.

none of my professors were non-white. only one was discernably a non-christian.

most of my "liberal" education came from me seeking out other opinions, thoughts and perspectives ON MY OWN. *shrug* for what that's worth.

I can agree with this article to some degree. The secular education that is now provided in many communities is not religion neutral (as they should be), they are anti-religion. From my experience, the education that was provided to me was predominently from left leaning teachers/programs.

Fortunately for me, I was born with a predisposition to question authority. Not necessarily a good thing for a military man but in the academic environment it served me well. I was a non-traditional college student (fulltime military, part time student).

We had an interesting mix of professors. Some were career academics and others were full time business/ industry professionals that taught part time. My part time education spanned about 15 years and 5 different universities due to military assignments. One thing was fairly consistant from school to school. The career academics were much more to the left than the teachers that had left the academic world for a realworld job and then returned to the classroom.

I think one of the major failings of our education system isn't the content of the classes,it's the approach to learning. Schools should focus more on critical thinking and analytical skills. Too much time is spent learning "facts" rather than interpreting what the facts mean.

Some of my best teachers were the ones that asked the question "what do you think about... and why? There were no wrong answers as long as you could back up your answer with justification.

My kid's teachers seem to all be friggin' liberals, filling his head with junk. But it's okay with me because when he gets home and we discuss politics, he invariably sees things my way, though not always...

To follow-up on what Mac said: Shame on any responsible adult that leaves it up to any school, much less a public school, to educate their child. My son's education is MY responsibility. We spend a lot of time together and I know what he's reading and hearing in school and he knows my view on things and what things I think are important.

This year I took him out of school for three days and we flew to Washington, D.C. For three days we toured the monuments, museums, and the U.S. Capital.

He's seven years old and has been to the polls with me for every election since he was born. We discuss which candidates we support and why, all during the election cycle. He's met our Governor, our Congressman, one of our Senators, and numerous local elected officials. He want's to meet George Bush, but I don't think that's going to happen. Maybe he'll get an autographed photo one day.

My kids went to Catholic school most of their education. Their teachers were pretty conservative. What I have seen, though, is my children also are allowed to watch many TV shows. Read the paper. Have differing opinions. Ask questions. Research. They have their minds wide open for information regardless.

If their teacher says (this is taught at their school)that animals have no soul and cannot go to heaven. My kids have decided that their Nun is full of hooey and that animals do have souls and go to heaven.

As previously stated...it is absolutely up to the parents to decide how open or closed minded their offspring will be. I can cite several examples of highly conservative upbringings producing some of the world's biggest liberals.

Unfortunately closed mindedness is two sided (as the article states). There a

There are just as many closed minded "liberals" as there are conservatives. Those closed minded "liberals" come from the same upbringing as the rest of us. Mostly it is the parents steering which guides the minds of the youngsters. But it is up to the individual to decide which way he/she will proceed with life ultimately.

Environment is key. But it is not the ultimate deciding factor, if the individual has a strong enough will and intelligent thought process.
